Daniel Dworsky Obituary

October 4, 1927 - January 19, 2022 Daniel L. Dworsky passed peacefully, gracefully at home, surrounded by his loving and devoted family at the age of 94. He will be remembered for countless outstanding achievements as both an athlete and an architect, but to his family he was the epitome of strength and elegance – a compassionate, funny, musical, artistic and beloved "Papa" of a grateful family.
Born October 4, 1927 in St. Paul, MN, Dworsky first moved to Los Angeles after competing as an All-American linebacker for the University of Michigan's undefeated National Championship teams in 1947 and 1948. At the 1948 Rose Bowl, the Wolverines delivered a decisive blow against USC with a score of 49-0. Once he had a taste of Los Angeles, he was a first round draft pick of The Los Angeles Dons and after a year of pro football, began a 50-year career as an influential Los Angeles architect as founder and president of Dworsky Associates. A longstanding member of the American Institute of Architects College of Fellows, Dworsky helped shape the mid-century modern movement and influenced many who had the privilege to work alongside him.
Dworsky designed many important projects including Crisler Arena at the University of Michigan, Drake Stadium at UCLA, The L.A. Branch of the Federal Reserve Bank, and the Tom Bradley International Terminal at LAX to name just a few. He also proudly served on several boards and committees including Jewish Big Brothers Big Sisters of Los Angeles and the Federal Reserve Board Design Oversight Committee.
Dworsky is survived by his beloved wife of 64 years, Sylvia Dworsky, and his three children, Doug (Eva, David and Michael), Laurie (Randy Schwab, Jonathan and Andrew) and Nancy (Alex Gardos, Max and Hannah).
If there's a piano in heaven, he's playing a Gershwin tune.

I have fond memories of Dan & his brother, Bob from my childhood in St.Paul, and just last week took a road trip for my 90th birthday from Madison, Wi, with my 2 sons, down memory lane & looked up the 4 plex on Igelhart Ave. During my college years I had the opportunity to visit L.A., looked up Dan & had a wonderful evening out on the town, having dinner & seeing George Sherring perform) It was a special reconnection.

Sylvia,

So sorry to read of Dan´s passing. He was truly a remarkable guy- talented in many ways and as nice a man as you could want. I cooperated with him on the development of the Water Treatment Plant and the Public Works Administration building for the City of Beverly Hills when I was on the Public Works Commission. But my mind goes back to the late 1950´s when we all lived on Delongpre in West Hollywood.

Heartfelt condolences to you and your family.

Dan Dworsky was a great man, architect and athlete. I was honored to get to meet him, know him, spend time with him and interview him through my conceived LA 12 ARCHITECTS exhibitions, forums and meetings and in my follow-up book 12 LOS ANGELES ARCHITECTS. I Knew Dan to be a gentleman and a forerunner. Dan made a lifetime of contributions to our world. He will be greatly missed and appreciated. My condolences to his wife Sylvia, Doug and the entire family. Thank You Dan and Rest In Peace. Offering picture of Dan & Sylvia at LA @ meeting at Kappe Res. c1975

Condolences to you and your entire family, Sylvia. I will always be grateful for the very real role Dan played in my professional life - accepting and encouraging me at just the right time early in my career and serving as my unwitting mentor in my practice. The example he set inspires me still.

To Sylvia, Doug, Laurie, and Nancy,
It is rare to find in an architect an individual who was an All-American, repeat national champion, and professional football player; one who was also an accomplished architect with a distinguished practice; an accomplished musician; a loving husband, father and grandfather; a statuesquely handsome man; and one who was always a gentleman with a soft demeanor and sense of quiet confidence. He will live in my memory and I am quite sure in the minds and hearts of all who knew him. Sylvia, Alice and I extend our most heartfelt condolences to your entire family. Rest well, Dan, you enjoyed a life well lived, an example to us all.
