Daniel Lee Obituary

December 15, 1930 - December 14, 2015 Daniel Kai Lee was born on December 15, 1930 in Shanghai, China, the eldest of five children of Charles (Vee Zeu) Lee and Lucy (Wen Tien) Chu. At age 11, after some boys roughed him up and stole his bicycle, he took up boxing. In 1948, at age 18, he won the "Golden Gloves" championship of China. His father did not think he would win the national title and agreed to buy him a Harley Davidson motorcycle if he did. In 1949, he escaped from Shanghai on one of the last ships to get out before the city fell to communist forces. His Harley was among the only things he was able to take with him. The rickety, leftover WWII Japanese destroyer broke down many times and the normal 30 hour trip took 4 weeks. Dan spent his time assisting the radio operator and translating for the captain when they were assisted by a British destroyer that towed the ship to Taiwan. He and a friend toured the entire island of Taiwan on their motorcycles. Dan trained his German shepherd, Wolfie, to ride on the back of his motorcycle. Given the primitive state of the roads and infrastructure in the early 1950's, they were quite a sensation, and the press covered their trip. In 1953, Dan came to the US and earned a degree in electrical engineering from Utah State University. He became an engineer at Jet Propulsion Laboratory in the heady pre-Apollo days, before retiring after 30 years. He worked on many innovative projects including Galileo, Magellan, Mission to Mars and Topex/Poseidon. Always an athlete, he earned a brown belt in judo and black belt in Kenpo Karate before becoming the first student in Bruce Lee's Los Angeles Jeet Kune Do studio in 1967. He took up Tai Chi Chuan, and studied with some renowned early masters from China and Taiwan. He became a Tai Chi master and founded the Daniel Lee Tai Chi Chuan Academy, which he directed for 40 years. He went to be with the Lord on Monday, December 14, one day before his 85th birthday. He is survived by his wife, Helen Chang, her daughters Adilaide and Kitty Yao and grandchildren Austin Chang, Melanie and Russell Ma. He also is survived by his children Debbie Lee Bump (Dan Bump), Robert Lee (Janice Lee), Diana Lee Rose, Donna Lee Oda (Alan Oda) and grandchildren Paul & Rosalind Bump, Jennifer, Stephen, & Matthew Lee, and Peter & Andrew Oda.

My sincere condolences of Mr. Lee's passing. I was a student for a year at his Pasadena class. I was reviewing my notes that I still keep to update my skill. I still remember his teachings and I really appreciate that he was a patient and thorough teacher. He was definitely a gift that enhanced my and I'm sure other's life.

I never had a chance to give my condolences. I met Mr. Lee once and he had so much energy and was very playful. I wanted to post here because I have a special project pertaining to Mr. Lee. If any one of you knew Daniel really well, please reach out.

I had the pleasure of studying under Dan Lee at the Aspen Academy of Martial & Healing Arts. Dan and I made a connection because my father worked on NASA projects at JPL the same time Dan did.

He was not only a great teacher but a compassionate and wise human being.

I studied Tai Chi with Master Lee in Pasadena in the early 80's. He was kind, patient and joyful. I feel blessed to have known him

I lost touch with Daniel and just learned that he had passed some time ago. We met as practice partners in a seminar taught by Liang Shouyu in Winchester VA. He was very friendly and helpful while I was still a Tai Chi novice. He shared some of his Bruce Lee stories and introduced me as a friend to several well-known Tai Chi masters. Years later he invited me to work with him while he was teaching Tai Chi martial applications. I remarked that his moves felt noticeably smoother. His smile lit up as he said, "Yes, finally, in my 70's I've learned to combine Wing Chun and Tai Chi. His friendliness and sincerity made a big impression on me. condolences to all family and friends.

Daniel Lee was the true embodiment of the Living Tao. A man of peace, and a master martial artist. A scientist and scholar, a dear friend and a rascal! When I lost my husband, he called often to cheer me up, and urged me to go on. The world is somehow diminished without this special man.

Pop,

It feels like as if I have a gigantic hole in my heart and the tears are constantly flowing.

I keep forgetting your are gone and find myself picking up my phone to call you.

You are a true original!

I have never met another who has had the sheer number of adventures and accomplishments in so many different areas: athletics, academics, the space race, Jeet Kune Do & Tai Chi and teaching Chinese culture and language.

I know you are now in a better place and I am so lucky to have been able to call you
my Pop/Dad/Father.

You will always be forever in my heart,
Love your daughter,
Diana

I am very sorry for your loss. Losing a loved one is never easy. At times like these, "God can give us power beyond what is normal,"
so we can keep going from one day to the next. 2Corinthians 4:7.
