Darrell Holman Obituary

HOLMAN, M.D., Darrell "Red" (93), passed away February 11, 2008. He earned his Bachelor of Arts degree from Stanford in 1937, and Master's Degree in education in 1938. At Stanford, he met Mary Hayes whom he married in 1941. Holman graduated from Georgetown University School of Medicine in 1948. He did an internship at Los Angeles County Hospital, followed by a year in the U.S. Army in Herlong, CA. He completed a residency in General Surgery at Los Angeles County Hospital in 1955. Dr. Holman entered private practice in Arcadia, where he built the 612 Medical Building in 1965. He served as chief of medical staff for both Santa Teresita Hospital in Duarte and Methodist Hospital in Arcadia. In the 1960s, he served as program chairman of the Los Angeles Surgical Forum. In 1968, he was elected to the Board of Trustees of Citrus College in Glendora, later serving as the Board President. In 1977, he and several other physicians opened the Arcadia Outpatient Surgery Center, one of the first such centers in California. He had been a member of the Monrovia Kiwanis Club and San Gabriel Country Club. In 1994, his wife Mary passed away. Later, he married Cecil Dougherty of San Marino. He is survived by his wife, Cecil; eight children: William (Carol), Mary Villa, James (Claudia), David, Phillip (Margie), Christopher (Patricia), Steven (Gaye), and Robert; his 23 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. He was also preceded in death by his son, Thomas, in 1991. Funeral Mass at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, February 16th will be held at St. Rita's Catholic Church in Sierra Madre. Care entrusted to Douglass & Zook Mortuary, Monrovia (626-358-3244).

MY DEEPEST CONDOLENCES TO THE HOLMAN FAMILY I HAVE KNOWN RED MOST OF MY LIFE HE WAS ONE OF THE NICEST MOST PLEASANT MEN I HAVE EVER MET. MY FATHER AND MY SELF HAVE ALSO PARTICIPATED ON THE PASO TRAIL RIDE WITH RED AND HIS BOYS HE WILL CERTAINLY BE MISSED BY ALL ON THE RIDE AND ELSEWERE.
