David Mellon Obituary

June 16, 1931 - March 9, 2022
David Cochran Mellon was born to William (Knox) Mellon, Sr. and Zelma Cochran Mellon in San Marino, CA. David was raised in San Marino and Pasadena and attended local elementary schools, where he developed life-long friends. For high school, David attended the Midland School in Los Olivos. He received a Bachelor's degree from Claremont Men's College, where he was a member of the Army ROTC. He subsequently honorably served in both the regular Army and the Reserves.

David was a postal carrier, a job he thoroughly enjoyed and did well, making many friends among the people on his route in Pasadena. With his gregarious, outgoing personality and ready smile, David easily made friends and was well known in Pasadena, which was his home for over 40 years. His friends were treasures to him, a vital part of David's life, and he was a good friend in return.

David was a great storyteller, a dealer in one-liners, a performer in every sense of the word. David lived in a fine old apartment building in the heart of Pasadena where he became de facto landlord to half a dozen other tenants, all of whom became his friends and could count on him and his craftsmen to tend a beautiful garden and keep the place shipshape.

David loved to travel. Martha's Vineyard, Nantucket, the San Juan Islands, and Germany were favorite destinations. He enjoyed plays in London and New York. One of David's favorite events was the annual Tournament of Roses in Pasadena. He seldom missed a parade. He also enjoyed his daily strolls in Lacy Park.

David was preceded in death by his parents, older brother William (Knox) Mellon, Jr. and half-brothers Peter and John Mellon. He is survived by sister-in-law Carlotta Mellon, niece Andrea Mellon Schneider, nephews Fred (Carrie) Mellon, Alex Mellon, and Daniel Mellon, great nieces Heaven Burgo, Katie Mellon, Julia Schneider, great nephew Conner Mellon and great, great nephew Jeff Burgo and great, great niece Amber Burgo.

Donations in David's memory can be made to the Midland School (P.O Box 8, Los Olivos, CA 93441), the Pasadena Tournament of Roses Foundation, or the charity of your choice.

David has an important place in my heart for the caring that he showed me at a critical time in my life and for the
friendship that he showed thereafter. I am missing him.
