Doris Martin Obituary
" Of special importance to her was the work she did for immigration policy and teaching English as a second language, as well as the time she spent with the healing ministries of All Saints in Hoboken and St Thomas the Apostle in Hollywood. She is survived by her sons Greg, James, and Geoff, and her brother Jack Viola, and was predeceased by her husband Win Atkins. There will be a memorial service at 5 p.m. on Saturday, June 11 at St. Thomas the Apostle Episcopal church, 7501 Hollywood Blvd.

I will miss Doris so much! She was an inspirational teacher at GCC and beyond. I knew her for many years and she was always so kind, fun, and willing to share insights and teaching tips. We are holding you and your family in the light.

Doris was an absolutely wonderful colleague at GCC, mostly because she never reduced herself to being merely a colleague. She was verve incarnate; I adored running into her on campus. Her conversations were lively, insightful, thoughtful, irreverent - full of energy and care. We once laughed so hard because I had been peeking into her classroom through a small window in the closed door; I managed to trip just as she caught my eye, falling right out of the "frame" in what she called the best slapstick work she'd seen at the community college. I'm so sorry to learn of her death. She was a joy to know, a truly generous and unstinting nature. I think of her often and will continue to hold her dear.

Doris would often come by office, where we would both reminisce about New York. She was a raconteur par excellence and an excellent ESL instructor. I was also grateful to see her perform on the stage. I will miss you, Doro.

I taught with Doris at GCC for many years. She was a hoot. Always upbeat and encouraging, always fun to be around. She'll be missed.
