Dorothy Feinberg Obituary

Dorothy Levine Feinberg was an extraordinary and loving presence in the lives of all who had the privilege of knowing her during her nearly 94 years. The fourth of 5 children born in Cleveland, Ohio to Ida and Aaron Levine, Mom was the beloved wife to Sam Feinberg for 65 years; mother to Janice and Gil & to Allan (Nancy); grandmother to Andrea (Jason), Jennifer, Daniel (Joe), and Michael; and adoring great-grandmother to Jacob, Hannah, Charlie, and Hayley, all of whom treasured her wisdom, guidance, and unconditional love. She is also survived by her sister, Beatrice Gingold, and her dedicated caregiver, Sally, who has been at Mom's side for 7 years. Dorothy was a woman ahead of her time, a member of "The Greatest Generation" who graduated from Ohio State University with a degree in statistical social work and then served her country during World War II, helping with the management of civilian rationing and labor ceilings. She worked at Third Street Elementary School before returning to college for her teaching credential, and then taught at the first Title One school in Los Angeles. She served as treasurer to Hadassah and Jewish Professional Women, charitable organizations that were especially dear to her. Mom continued to pursue her lifelong passion for learning with weekly classes at Adat Ari El. After macular degeneration robbed her of her vision, she continued to avidly follow current events and marvel at the advances in technology that have occurred since she first worked on an early computer in the 1940's. Dorothy derived her greatest pleasure from sharing her love of tradition, music, and learning with her family. For decades, Mom and Dad hosted Passover Seders and Thanksgiving dinners for their extended family and countless friends. Since the birth of her first great-grandchild, Mom looked forward to our weekly Monday family gatherings that were filled with laughter, music, food, and love. Mom passed away peacefully, surrounded by love, in the home she lived in for 62 years. Thank you to all the angels from Skirball Hospice for their compassionate care. We will celebrate Mom's long and beautiful life on Tuesday, April 22, 2014 at 3:00 at Mt. Sinai Hollywood Hills. In lieu of flowers, you can honor Dorothy's memory with donations to Tamar Ami Hadassah or to the Disney Family Cancer Center Fund in the Providence St. Joseph Foundation, 501 S. Buena Vista, Burbank, CA 91505.
