Dorothy Hibler Obituary

Dorothy "Dottie" Johnson Hibler
October 4, 1912 – April 7, 2010

Dorothy "Dottie" Johnson Hibler was born in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada on October 4, 1912 and passed away in Glendale, California on April 7, 2010 surrounded by her family.

Dottie spent her early years in Minneapolis, Minnesota but moved to New York City to live with her sister Alyce when she was 15. She was a high fashion/runway model when she met her future husband, Winston "Hib" Hibler, whom she married in 1930. Shortly after their marriage, Dottie and Winston moved West to follow their dreams and the siren call of Hollywood.

Dottie went on to skate in the Ice Capades with Sonja Henie and was a featured skater in many of Sonja Henie's films, including "Thin Ice," "My Lucky Star" and "Sun Valley Serenade." She also had a brief stint as a bare back rider for the famous show horse trainer, Mark Smith.

Dottie and Winston settled in the San Fernando Valley where Winston became a "Disney Legend." Winston was a writer, producer, narrator and director for Walt Disney Productions for over 30 years. Dottie and Hib moved to Glendale, California in 1963.

Dottie was a founding member and past president of the Toluca Guild of Childrens Hospital Los Angeles. She was an avid bridge player and loved to travel, especially to her homes in Lake Arrowhead and Palm Springs.

Dottie was loved and adored by all who knew her.

Dottie was preceded in death by Winston, her loving husband of 46 years. She is survived by her children, Jon Michael Hibler, Christopher Hibler, Melissa Sutton, daughter-in-law Ann Hibler, son-in-law Robert Sutton, 10 grandchildren, and 8 great-grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Childrens Hospital Los Angeles: M-S #4, 4650 Sunset Blvd., Los Angeles, CA 90027.

A Memorial Celebration of Dottie's Life will be held on April 24 at Oakmont Country Club in Glendale.

I haven't seen Dottie for many years, but always remember the Christmas Eve family gathering with such fond memories. My thoughts are with the family and hope to see you all soon.

My mother and her twin sister (Annabelle and Marianne Brude) skated with Dottie and were in the same Sonja films. My Aunt ( Marianne) lived in Burbank and kept up a relationship with Dottie until she moved to Florida in the '90's. I am so sorry for your loss, but I'm sure you have a heartful of wonderful memories and are ever so grateful that she was able to enjoy such a long and fulfilling life.
I have many photos, both studio and personal shots, from their years with Sonja. I know Dottie is in many of them. If you would like me to share them with you, I would be more than happy to do so.
Sincerely,
Linda Paige

I just happened to see this, and remember her from my childhood so well. I went to drama school with Melissa in North Hollywood. I have fond memories of your family and send my deepest sympathies and condolences.
