Edith Polster Obituary

POLSTER, Edith Motridge Having lived a long and full life, died at her home in Fairbanks Ranch, California on November 1, 2007. Edith was born in San Francisco and attended Hollywood High School and USC. At an early age, Edith developed her swimming skills. Since there was no girls' swim team at Hollywood High, Edith trained, when permitted, with the boys' team and later trained at the Los Angeles Athletic Club. She participated in the United States Nationals and was the national champion in the backstroke for four consecutive years. Edith was a member of the U.S. team in the 1936 Berlin Olympics. Edith was under contract at MGM Studios for 15 years working on all the swimming movies and as Esther Williams' double. Edith married Leonard H. Polster in 1969, and the two traveled extensively throughout the world. They moved to Fairbanks Ranch (north San Diego County) in 1983. They have been involved in numerous philanthropic activities, including the Scripps Polster Breast Care Center and the San Dieguito Boys' and Girls' Club. Edith is survived by her husband, Leonard, and his three sons, as well as four grandchildren. She will be remembered for her determination and caring nature. Services will be private. The family suggests that in lieu of flowers donations be made in Edith's name to either the Scripps Polster Breast Care Center or the San Dieguito Boys' and Girls' Club.
