Eugene MANDEL Obituary

MANDEL, Eugene David "Gene" Died June 5, 2010 at his home in Portland, Oregon at the age of 90. He lived in the Los Angeles area from the time of his honorable discharge from the United States Army in 1946 to July, 2005 when he and his wife Helen moved to Portland to be next door to their daughter and grandsons. His wife, son Eric Mandel, daughter Halle Sadle, and son-in-law Rick Sadle were with him at the time of his death from congestive heart failure. He is also survived by his grandsons Sam and Jake Sadle. Gene's was a life well lived and generous. He contributed to many causes, including early childhood education, population control, medical research, the arts and relief of earthquake victims in Haiti. Gene was also an avid volleyball player, skier, sailer and skilled woodworker. His twice-weekly paddle tennis games and e-mails were a highlight for many of his friends. He was born March 5, 1920 in Chicago, Illinois and left when he joined the military as World War II was heating up. Gene was in the U.S. Army through the war, serving in New Guinea and the Philippines. He spent most of his career in the investment business in the Los Angeles area. Additionally, in the 1950s, Gene was involved in The Country School in North Hollywood. His ashes were cremated and will be scattered at sea.
