Fred OKEN Obituary

September 1, 1933 - November 22, 2025 It is with heavy hearts and great sadness that we announce the death of Frederick Shane Oken (Fred). This humor-filled and generous man passed away peacefully on November 22, 2025, at age 92 with his beloved wife of 45 years, by his side.
Fred was born in Chicago, Illinois and lived there until age 7, when he and his family relocated to Los Angeles, California. When Fred was a teenager, his mother fell ill and this loyal son helped care for her until her death. Following her passing, Fred's father co-founded the Myasthenia Gravis Foundation, an organization which seeks treatments for the devastating illness which claimed Fred's mother's life.
More than a devoted son, Fred was a cherished friend and family member to many, a steadfast and dedicated brother to 3 siblings, Stan, Buzz and Ruth, a loving and attentive husband to Mona and an affectionate and caring father and grandfather to 4 children and 8 grandchildren.
Fred Oken also was a successful businessman, entrepreneur, teacher and investor who ran his own insurance agency and brokerage for many years and then became actively engaged in his real-estate investments.
This great man had a passion for baseball, both playing and watching. In college, he played for L.A. State, later earning semi-pro status for the Chicago White-Sox. Fred shared this interest with his kids and grandkids. Going to Dodger Stadium was a usual family outing and often a late night as "you can't leave until it's over! You never know what's going to happen in a baseball game!" He also loved woodworking: making beautiful bowls and spending countless hours over his lathe.
Fred never complained or felt sorry for himself. He loved having Passover Seders, where the 4-questions were asked in multiple languages as well as Chanukah parties where gifts abounded and there were many menorahs so that every guest got to light a candle. Fred welcomed everyone with open arms and offered advice and direction to anyone who asked.
Fred's joy, love and quick sense of humor continued to the very end. His voice and his laughter will be missed. At 92, he was proof that there's never enough time.
Funeral services for Fred will be held Sunday, November 30th at 11:00am at Mt. Sinai Memorial Park, 5950 Forest Lawn Drive, Los Angeles, CA 90068
A donation in honor of Fred to either the Myasthenia-Gravis Foundation of America or to one of the many ALS charities would have made him very happy.
