Frederick Wagner Obituary

WAGNER III, Frederick Henry Only grandson of Col. Fred H. Wagner and Lillian Wright Wagner, and only son of Fred H. Wagner, Jr. and Marie Wagner of Hagerstown, Maryland. Beloved husband of Maria for 65 years; proud father of Frederick (Michelle), Caroline (James) Alley, Jeanne Oster, Laurence (Xiomara) and Peter, and loving grandfather of thirteen. Born in 1917 in Baltimore, Maryland, he was educated in Baltimore, White Plains, New York, Grosse Point and Ann Arbor, Michigan, and Cambridge in Great Britain. He served as a Navigator in the Army Air Corps in World War II in the Pacific Theater. Starting as an Auditor for R.C.Allen Business Machines in Grand Rapids, Michigan, he was transferred to Los Angeles in 1955 as West Coast Sales Manager. With the new era in electronic business machines, he eventually moved to Quality Business Machines in Inglewood as a successful major account salesman until retirement. The Museum of Natural History was his dedicated retirement work, building up its Education department with outreach to local schools from 1982 until 1992. His love of sport led him to enjoy the trampoline in the 1960's, and rekindled his fondness for rowing, which he practiced until he reached his eighties. He will be remembered for his love of music, travel, and learning, his friendship and fairness to all, and his curiosity, determination, and sense of responsibility. He courageously battled his way back from health problems in 1999, but the drain from the battle finally took him on July 14, 2006. Funeral Mass will be held on Thursday July 20th, at 11 a.m. at St. John of God Retirement and Care Center, 2035 West Adams Blvd., Los Angeles, CA 90018. In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County, 900 Exposition Blvd., Los Angeles, CA. 90007. Frederick H Wagner IV

July 19, 2006

Dad taught me Morse code to help me get my first ham license, taught me how to play clarinet and sax and flute. He introduced me to surfing, first at Grand Haven MI, then at Zuma Beach. He served in the Army Air Corps - I joined the Air Force after Loyola High School. He got me started on many of the things that have made my life what it is. I am deeply grateful to him, and I will always remember him!
