Gary Nathanson Obituary

December 8, 1933 - February 23, 2017 Gary "Butzy" Nathanson, 83, died peacefully in his Santa Monica home surrounded by his loved ones. Born in Minneapolis, Gary attended the University of Minnesota, then served in the U.S. Army stationed in Germany. Upon his return, he joined the Merrill Lynch investment firm in Minneapolis, later moving to Los Angeles to take over management of the Beverly Hills office of Dupont. In 1973, he retired from the brokerage business and co-founded Hanaco, a real estate investment firm. Gary and his wife Linda traveled extensively to many continents where they golfed, hiked, biked and fished. They spent winters in Rancho Mirage and summers in Aspen. Gary will always be remembered for his enormous heart, his adventurous spirit, his sense of humor and deep love of family. In addition to Linda, he is survived by his children, Andrea, Debra, Michael and Amy; brother Geoffrey and sister Nancy Bloch; his grandchildren, Kayla, Miles and Wyatt; and his beloved labradoodle, Rosie.

Butzy will be greatly missed. Very generous with all who knew him. Although we knew of each other as second cousins, we had never met. When I let him know that I would be in Palm Springs to visit my mother, he took the extra time to drive down to meet me.

Gary (Butzy) was first a client, then he and Linda became great friends. He was full of life, had a great sense of humor and will be deeply missed. Still hard to believe. . .

Butsy will always hold a special place in our hearts and we will miss him dearly. His great sense of humor and robust personality endeared him to everyone who had the good fortune of crossing paths with him including our entire Rappaport clan. His memory will always be a blessing for us.

We send our deepest condolences to all of his family and pray for your strength and healing during this difficult and sad time.

Love,

Jon & Diane Rappaport and Family

We were the best of friends. We car-pooled
together going to the "U". We were
fraternity brothers, we played freshman
football together. We got into some trouble
together and had great fun. Remember the
turkey from the 620 club, with Howie. How
about the night at the Key Club. I will never forget you, my friend.

Butzy, You will be missed. Thank you for being such a good friend of the family, especially Kenny. Dad has great college stories, most of which include Butzy. His kindness, generosity of time, and advice helped me get grounded in Southern California, when I was new and lost out here. Gary introduced me to people and we did business together. Butzy was a great negotiator; I learned a great deal in a short time, just listening, while waiting in his home for our time together. He would be on with real estate partners and sometimes clearly the other side of the deal. I think you know how those deals turned out, not favoring the other side. One time, he negotiated our deal as I left his home with a female, black lab named Heidi. He could negotiated a mule, snake and Parrot! Keep on biking & smiling!
