Gene B. Kaufman F.A.C.S., M.D.

March 16, 1924 - February 23, 2014 Dr. Gene B. Kaufman was born in Chicago and passed away at his home in Palos Verdes Estates with his loving family. His undergraduate work was at the University of Chicago. He graduated from University of Illinois Medical School with honors and membership in Alpha Omega Alpha Medical Honors Society in 1947 at age 23. He trained in surgery at Chicago's Cook County Hospital and the Veterans Hospitals in Pittsburgh and Michigan. His surgical training was twice interrupted by service in the US Navy. A veteran of the Korean War, he served 18 months aboard the USS Skagit (AK105) as the ship's medical officer. He completed an Oncological Surgery Fellowship at the City of Hope National Medical Center. He met his beloved wife, Annette, in 1947 and their marriage in January 1949 was blessed with 4 sons and 65 years. California's beauty and weather drew them to choose the South Bay area, where he opened his practice in 1955. Dr. Kaufman and his family were active members of the area's Jewish community, and he was a strong supporter of the State of Israel. He was an avid tennis player through his mid 80's. As a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons, Dr. Kaufman loved his practice of surgery and caring for patients; he was a dedicated physician with a busy practice until his retirement in 1991. For many years he was on call around the clock as an emergency and trauma surgeon at several local hospitals, frequently performing life-saving surgery on the injured and critically ill. He was active on the medical staff at Torrance Memorial and Little Company of Mary hospitals, and due to his love of medicine, he continued to attend medical conferences until shortly before his passing. Dr. Kaufman was predeceased by his grandson Joshua, and is survived by his wife Annette, his sons David (Marci), Charles (Laura), Adam (Carolyn) and Joel (Anna) and 12 grandchildren, Nathan (Malkie), Ari (Chana Ainyah), Beryl, Daniel, Jordan, Sara, Aaron, Faith, Noah, Alexander, Eli, and Mara, and two great-grandchildren (Yossi and Levy). Services have been held.
