Richter, George R.
Passed away on July 15, 2002. Born in Blue Island, Illinois on July 8, 1910. He graduated from Culver Military Academy before moving to California with his family. He received his undergraduate degree in 1930 and his law degree in 1933 from University of Southern California. After his graduation he joined the law firm of Mathes and Sheppard which became Sheppard, Mullin, Richter and Hampton where he remained for more than 50 years. Regarded as one of the nations leading business lawyers, he was Chairman of the Section of Corporation, Banking and Business Law of American Bar Association with 40,000 members, member of the house of delegates of the American Bar Association, member of the American Law Institute and a fellow of the American Bar Foundation. He became a member of the National Conference of Commissioners of Uniform State Laws, a group of lawyers representing each state and appointed by their respective governors and served as President of this group and chaired its Executive Committee. Mr. Richter was honored by a Joint Resolution of the California Legislature commending his activities as a Commissioner, his work on the passage of the Uniform Commercial Code and other public services. Mr. Richter recently made a gift to the USC Law School for the George R. Richter Fund for the Advancement of the Law School which will be used to support the school's highest priorities in teaching, research and scholarship. Mr. Richter served on the board of the Newport Harbor Art Museum and St. Joseph's Hospital. Mr. Richter had two lifelong commitments, his family and the law. He leaves his beloved wife of more than 60 years, Betty Jane; children, Georgann Richter (Patrick) Lovejoy and Craig (Amanda) Richter and grandchildren Timothy and Kelly Lovejoy. Memorial service is Saturday, July 20 at 2:30 p.m. at Pacific View Memorial Park in Corona del Mar.
