George Schultz Obituary

Schultz, George Frederick Sept. 25, 1953 - Feb. 13, 2004
Gifted teacher, beloved son and brother, George Schultz of Huntington Beach, California passed away Friday, Feb. 13, 2004 from complications stemming from Lupus. He was 50 years old. George taught for 26 years in the Ocean View School system in Huntington Beach where his passion for math, science and English was eagerly absorbed by thousands of middle school children who passed through his classrooms and enriched his life. George had received recognition as a mentor teacher for his devotion and excellence in the art of education. George loved exploring unconventional ways to stimulate his students' minds. He was remarkably resilient for the past 30 years as he courageously battled SLE while maintaining a fiercely independent, self-supporting life-style. He traveled to Ireland, wrote poetry and short stories, and read books by the bagful. He had recently received a kidney transplant and had enjoyed a summer full of renewed vigor and enthusiasm for life. "Dum vivimus vivamus," a Latin phrase for "while we live, let us live!" was a favorite motto. A stroke precipitated his death. Survivors: father and mother, Fred and Vivian Schultz, Garden Grove, CA; sister, Phyllis Boyd, husband Craig, Harbor City, CA; brother, Darrel Schultz, wife Terry, daughters Adrienne and Amanda, Yorba Linda, CA. His family will dearly miss his quick wit, boundless intellectual curiosity, and sensitive, compassionate nature. Memorial services followed by a celebration of his life will be held on Thursday, Feb. 19 at 7 p.m. at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, 13082 Bowen St., Garden Grove, CA.

George was blessed to be a blessing. He was a cousin and a friend whom we admired greatly. The world has lost a great man. I can't remember who won the Heismann Trophy last year or the Oscar or the Nobel Prize. What I can remember are the teachers that had a lasting impact in my life. George was a teacher like that. George worked hard his entire life and is now at rest with his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.

Not many people are lucky enough to have a teacher that had changed and molded who they are/become. I was lucky enough to have 2 at the same time when I was in the 7th grade at Park View Elementary. Mr. Schultz was one of them.

He was my math honors teacher and my woodshop teacher, but most of all he was our friend. He was hard on us, than told he knew we had it in us all the time. He taught me that hard work pays off and that good grades were very important. Most of all he taught us that even though he was a tough teacher, he was a peer that would be a friend. Yes, teachers can be friends.

I had hoped my whole adult life that I would be able to find the 2 teachers. To my surprise, when my daughter started at Vista View this year I had seen his name listed as a teacher. I was bouncing off the walls when I found out it was him. We talked very briefly at Back to School Nite and I was thrilled that he had remembered who I was, but I did not get the chance to tell him what an amazing impact he had on my life. I had thought I would have the chance when I saw him next.

My daughter cried when she told me that he had passed as she knew how sad and upset I would be and am.

Mr. Schultz......THANK YOU!!!
