Grafton Tanquary Obituary

Grafton P. Tanquary, Jr. was born in Los Angeles on January 20, 1928, the son of Florence Mullin and Grafton Pettis Tanquary, a professor in the School of Speech at the University of Southern California.
Grafton attended Los Angeles High School, where he was a member of the All-City swimming team and the ROTC rifle team. He was a member of the Ephebian Society and received the Bausch and Lomb Science Award, graduating in 1945.
He attended USC on dual scholarships, lettered in swimming and water polo and was elected to Phi Beta Kappa, Phi Kappa Phi and Blue Key. He served on the school Senate, the Men's Judicial Council, as president of his fraternity's local chapter and as president of the Men Students Association. He was elected to Skull and Dagger and awarded the Order of the Palm upon graduating in 1949.
Following a year in Europe, he attended the Harvard Business School where he received an MBA with Distinction. In 1952 he joined the US Air Force as a second lieutenant and was assigned to the Inspector General's Office at the Headquarters of the Air Materiel Command in Dayton, Ohio.
Returning to Los Angeles in 1954, he joined Litton Industries as the thirteenth employee and served as General Manager of the Encoder Division and Director of Marketing for the Components Group. He was an early investor in Electronic Memories and later joined the company as manager of the Government Products Division and Special Assistant to the Chairman.
Grafton married Anna Gutierrez from Santa Barbara and, together they had two children, Maria Cristina and Grafton Tanquary III. There are five grandchildren, Charlotte, Christopher, Whitney, Cole and Flint.
He was president of the Beach Club, a director of the Jonathan Club and member of First Century Families.
Grafton was an Eagle scout, trout fisherman, photographer, art collector, squash player, orchid grower, wine and food enthusiast, paddle tennis player and bridge player.

Wonderful life he lived. My Dad also went to LA High, was a member of the rifle club and an Eagle Scout. When he passed in 2011 he wanted his Eagle Badge laid to rest with him. Sounds like two very similar gentlemen.
