Herbert Glaser Obituary

August 1, 1927 - December 28, 2024 Herb Glaser, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, and visionary leader, passed away peacefully on December 28, 2024, at the age of 97. Born on August 1, 1927, in New Brunswick, New Jersey, Herb's life was marked by intellectual curiosity, deep community involvement, and an enduring commitment to his faith and family.
Herb's remarkable educational journey began at the Teachers Institute of Yeshiva University during his high school years, followed by studies at UCLA and Harvard Law School. He excelled as a practicing attorney before transitioning to lead Glaser Development Company, a pioneer in the development of industrial real estate.
A devoted husband to Sharon, their love and partnership spanned over six decades. Together, they raised two children: Jonathan, married to Nancy, who resides in Los Angeles, and Tamar, married to Doron Kochavi, who lives in Tel Aviv, Israel. Herb and Sharon were blessed with five cherished grandchildren: Justine, Levi, Amit, Shir, and Aerin, who carry forward his legacy of kindness, generosity, and love of learning.
Herb dedicated his life to strengthening Jewish communities both in Los Angeles and Israel. As the founder and chair of the Los Angeles-Tel Aviv Partnership, he fostered connections through initiatives like the school twinning program. He held leadership roles in numerous organizations, including the Bureau of Jewish Education, Council on Jewish Life, Jewish Community Foundation, Los Angeles Jewish Federation, Hebrew Union College (now The Zelikow School of Jewish Nonprofit Management), American Jewish University, and Beth Jacob Congregation. Herb also served the City of Los Angeles as the president of the Fire Commission, showcasing his commitment to civic responsibility.
Herb's international leadership extended to serving on the boards of the Jewish Agency for Israel, Shalom Hartman Institute, and the Western Region Friends of Ben Gurion University. His passion for building bridges was a guiding principle throughout his life.
Herb and Sharon found joy in their shared adventures, dividing their time between Beverly Hills, Malibu, Vail, Colorado, and Ramat Hasharon, Israel. Their love of the great outdoors, music, skiing, photography, and travel brought them closer to each other and the world around them.
Herb Glaser's life was a testament to the power of vision, compassion, and community. His memory will be a blessing to all who knew him and the countless lives he touched.
Memorial services will be held at Hillside Memorial Park on Tuesday, December 31st at 2:00 pm.

My husband and I met Herb and Sharon along with their small children in the 1960's when Vail, Colorado was new and trying to make a name in the ski world. We were their ski instructors immediately becoming life-long friends bonding as a family whenever they were in the Rockies. My recollection of Herb, other than being Oh-so-handsome, was the he was COOL!. Cool in his gentle manner, cool in the way he conducted himself and very cool when, one snowy day he and I were skiing off-piste on the side of Riva Ridge, a challenging run on the Vail Mountain. Unexpectedly, Herb made a bad move and smashed into a huge seriously snow-laden pine that dumped big snow on top of him. Buried up to his shoulders, Herb looked up at me and simply said, "Yoiks!"
That was cool! Very cool! That was Herb!
