Herbert Reich Obituary

December 27, 1932 - January 1, 2018 Herbert Reich, of Malibu, passed away on January 1, 2018 in the very early morning. He was the son of Lester and Ella Reich and born in New York. Herb and Ellen were happily married for almost 47 years. When they married in 1971 they joined their families together.. There are four remaining children, Paul Reich, Julie King, William Gaynor, and James Gaynor. Herb and Ellen's youngest son, Barry Gaynor recently passed away on December 9, 2017. Herb leaves his beloved brother Richard and sister-in-law Dorothy Reich along with his nine grandchildren and six great-grandchildren, as well as the entire extended family all of whom contributed to his joy in life. Herb grew up in Newark, New Jersey and met Ellen when they were in the fifth grade. After high school, Herb served our country in the Air Force and then moved to California. He attended USC and up until his death you'd see him wearing his SC cap. Herb and Ellen re-met when he was back east on business in '71 and they married the same year. He brought his family to California and for three years they lived in Pacific Palisades. In 1971, Herb started H.R. Medical Supply delivering durable medical equipment to people in need at their homes. His company became known as "The Company With a Heart." He had three locations, one in Ventura, one in the valley and the original one in Santa Monica. In 1974 the family moved to Malibu. At that time Malibu was a township of Los Angeles County. Herb was very active in the cityhood movement, taping the town hall meetings on Monday nights and rushing them over to the then, publisher Anne Soble of the Surfside News so that she could include the news of the meetings in her paper the next morning. He participated in many other community services and served on the board of Senior Health and Peer Counseling, now known as WISE. He also was actively involved in fighting against the LNG proposal in our Malibu ocean waters. Herb had many passions,. He flew a single engine Cessna, enjoyed sailing, boating and fishing, rode motorcycles, and traveling in the US and other countries. He crafted beautiful ceramics, painted pictures and wrote poetry and stories. He was a devoted husband and father and especially enjoyed being with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Herb was always ready to lend a helping hand to those in need.

Herbert was a very kind man... In some ways he was like a father to me. He helped me when it was needed most. He was kind and a guiding father figure for many years. The love he showered on his children taught me so much. He taught me patience and graciousness. He made me feel a part of his family. I miss him and his many kidnesses. May he rest well.

For Ellen--
I didn't know about Herb's passing until today. I'm so sorry that
I didn't know at the time.

Herb was a generous, adventurous, sweet and loving man, as you know. He always said he'd done everything in his life that he
wanted to do---how many people can come close to saying that?
And yet, he still wanted to explore writing and making pottery art, two of his many talents.

I remember staying with both of you in your house on Cape Cod and taking a relaxing little boat trip around the lake, Herb pointing out the different sights--Elizabeth Montgomery's house--I think, who I had always loved as a child and who's father worked with my father
in early TV. I'm so sad that he is gone and I wish you so much love and big, if belated, hugs.

Herb influenced my career choices in a positive way, more than he ever knew. I valued my friendship with him very much. I admired him and the manner in which he lived his life. His generosity to those he loved is heartwarming. I will miss him.
