Hilda Fogelson Obituary

May 29, 1926 - June 19, 2024 Hilda Fogelson nee Anker died peacefully on June 19, 2024, at the age of 98. She was born in Berlin on May 29, 1926, and at the age of 13, fled to Britain with her sisters Eva and Dodi as part of the Kindertransport, a heroic effort to rescue Jewish children during WWII. Hilda spent several months at a boarding school in Broadstairs before finding a loving home at Kirdford Vicarage with other refugee children. She and her sisters were incredibly fortunate to be reunited with their parents George and Gertrude Anker.
Hilda graduated from Van Nuys HS, Class of '44, and from UCLA Class of '48, where she met Hershel Fogelson, the love of her life. They married at her parent's chicken farm and enjoyed 49 years of marriage filled with love and family.
A dedicated 1st grade teacher at Lenicia Weemes Elementary School, Hilda shared her experiences of the Holocaust with students in both the US and Germany. Her impact on the students was profound, reflecting her strength, bravery, and optimism. It was during her speaking engagements that she met Herb Murez, a Holocaust survivor from Vienna, who became a dear companion.
A resident of Studio City for 61 years, Hilda's final gift to her family was allowing them to support her peacefully in her passage from this world. She was a pillar of support as a mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, offering unconditional love and encouragement in every endeavor.
Hilda is survived by her three sons and daughters-in-law, David (Gail), Steven (Janie), and George (Sue), her grandchildren Gabrielle, Daniel, Stephanie, Rebecca, Julia, and Joshua, and her great-granddaughters Alexandra, Isabel, and Violet.
Hilda Fogelson embodied an unbreakable spirit, overcoming incredible adversity to live a life filled with love and warmth, leaving a lasting impact on all who knew her.

Dear Cousins George, Steve, and David, I remember your Mom very fondly, from the reunions in 2005 and 1997 and from your parents' visit in 1994.

Sorry to hear of Cousin Hilda's passing, but pleased and proud that she made it to 98. I first met her on a visit to California in 1963. She was always a very kind and gentle lady who cared about all her relatives.

What a beautiful story about a woman who was loved by many. She must have touched many lives in the 98 years she lived so fully. She will live within all of her beloved family for generations to come.

You only had to meet Hilda one time for her undivided attention to you even in a crowded room. She engaged in conversation in Yiddish with my late partner Harry Fischman, also a survivor, when she spoke at Temple Menorah many years ago. Her light will never go out~

I am very sorry about what happened to Mrs. Hilda's family. Thank God, she is now resting in the bosom of Abraham. There is no more pain or sadness. She is now rejoicing in the presence of Our Almighty God. Our God is great, and in the Name of Our Lord Jesus Christ, He will comfort and strengthen your hearts. A big hug to each of your family. ME: I met Imelda Luna through a reference from Mrs. Warner & Rhonda Christences, her neighbors. I have been working with her there since 2020 cleaning her house. Hilda always showed me trust and love for me. She always offered me coffee. Sometimes she told me about her past life. I greatly admired her as a brave and hard-working woman in everything. A big hug to each of her family.

I will always have fond memories of Hilda singing at our Passover Seders when I was a student at UCLA and later, UC Riverside. She will be dearly missed.
