Howard Flagg Obituary

FLAGG, Howard September 25, 1954 - October 18, 2009 Passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by his family and friends, watching the Blue Planet, and listening to Leonard Cohen. Howard is survived by his loving wife of 30 years, Angelica, son Harlan (Maren) and daughter Delahna. Howard (EE '75) was a graduate of Cooper Union for the Advancement of Science and Art where he served as a trustee and was winner of the 1997 Alumni of the year award. Howard was a captain of industry who touched millions of lives as a founder and President of Pairgain Technologies, an early pioneer of DSL technology. Howard formed a lifelong passion for sailing in his early teens and loved taking sailing trips with family and friends and spending time at the beach. Howard was a true renaissance man who loved learning and travel. He felt a strong social responsibility for philanthropy and supported many causes in his community, especially those involving youth and education. While Howard was wildly successful in everything he did, he was proudest of his family and his relationships with his very large circle of close friends. Private memorial services are pending. In lieu of flowers, please make a contribution to your charity of choice.

My condolences to the Flagg family. Howard certainly touched the lives of many. Those of us who worked for him at PairGain are greatly indebted to him for not only his vision, but for providing the most pleasant and productive work environment many of us have ever experienced. I keep hearing from former PairGain employees how they long for a company environment as Howard once provided for us.

I am very saddened by the news and all my deepest sympathy goes to Howard's family and friends.

Howard will be remembered as a great entrepreneur, a philosopher and a pacifist who made such an impact on so many people's life.

Howard was a wonderful person and mentor to me and it is with great sadness that I mourn his passing. To say he made a significant impact on my career would be an understatement. I vividly recall a phone call in 1997 when I was a sophomore at Cooper Union. As part of his outreach to promote entrepreneurship at his alma mater, I had applied to be a summer intern at PairGain. Instead of a recruiter, I was shocked to have the founder and CEO of this successful company spend an hour one evening telling me all about his company and entrepreneurship. The internship turned into my first job, which became my career.

In the years to follow he always took the time to give great advice (including about visiting Kyoto), share a meal with me at an Italian restaurant, and even help identify a disguised celebrity we bumped into in LAX (Victoria Beckham, his daughter determined).

I aspire to follow his example as a family man, philanthropist, and kind friend and mentor. I will miss him greatly.

I would like to express my great sadness upon learning of Howard's passing on this past Sunday. I was priveledged to guide his family around Kyoto about 6 years ago. He was a warm and wonderful man and I never forgot him or his beautiful family. A truly special soul that will never be forgotten here by me and elsewhere by many I am sure. Ian Ropke, Kyoto, Japan
