Irving Lippman Obituary

LIPPMAN, Irving Isadore (1906 - 2006) Irving Isadore Lippman, born in Edendale, California to Samuel and Celia Lippman, who emigrated from Russia in the late 1800's died on November 15, 2006 at the Motion Picture and Television Fund Home in Woodland Hills. "Lippy," as he was affectionately called spent 60 years in the film industry beginning as a sixteen-year old assistant camerman on a silent era comedy directed by Fatty Arbuckle in 1922 for $25 per week. His last service to the industry was as cinematographer on the TV Love Boat in 1982. Lippman held various jobs and titles during his tenure in the business from still photographer and film director to cinematographer. He photographed many world-renowned celebrities including Albert Einstein, President Franklin Roosevelt, and President Ronald Reagan with his wife Nancy. While Lippman worked primarily for Columbia Pictures he also worked for many other film and production companies. His work with such stars and personalities as Frank Capra, John Barrymore, John Wayne, Gary Cooper, James Stewart, William Holden, Clark Gable, and baseball great Mickey Mantle was well-known. Lippman photographed and caught on film such beauties as Mae West, Rita Hayworth, Marilyn Monroe, Joan Crawford, Ginger Rogers, Jean Arthur, Claudette Colbert and Barbara Stanwyck. Lippman was a hard working and in-demand individual who made the transition from film to TV as called on. Between his work in films and various television series Lippman was involved in an untold number of projects. Lippy's film career was interrupted during World War II when he was commissioned as a 2nd Lt. in the U.S. Army and assigned to the Pictorial Service in Paris. He established a photography school for the U.S. Army in London and had risen to the rank of Captain when he was discharged in 1946. Lippman was married three times and having no children is survived by nieces Gloria Labow (husband Barry), Betty Fink, Annette Havens (husband Wally), and nephews Gary Lippman, Stanley Lippman (wife Penny), and Darryl Lizer (wife Gail). Funeral services will be held on Friday, November 17 at 3 p.m. at Eden Memorial Park, Mission Hills.
