Irving Sherman Obituary
February 5, 1919 - July 22, 2022 Irving Sherman passed away July 22, 2022 in Newport Beach, CA at the age of 103.
Born in Portland, Oregon in 1919 to Max Sherman and Gussie Atkins, Irv moved with his family to Los Angeles in 1923, graduated from Hollywood High School in 1936, graduated from UC Berkely class of 1941 with a Bachelors in Soil Science, and from UCLA in 1964 with a Masters of Civil Engineering. Served in the Army Air Force as a photogrammetrist during WWII. After several soil science positions with federal agencies, Irv spent 26 years with the Los Angeles County Flood Control District, retiring in 1980 as head of the Water Conservation Division, then another 25 years as a consulting engineer. He was a Registered Civil Engineer and Registered Geotechnical Engineer for many years. He served as Board Member and President of the American Society of Civil Engineers Los Angeles Section; as Chairman of that Section's History and Heritage Committee; and as a member of the ASCE National History and Heritage Committee helping to designate national civil engineering landmarks. He earned many awards and recognitions during his career, most recently an ASCE Lifetime Achievement Award last February.
Irv was married to Jacqueline Joan Gordon Sherman from 1942 until she passed in 2003. He is survived by Lu Jenkins and her family, a son Max (Diane), grandson Paul (Karen), granddaughter Jennifer (Eston), four great-grandchildren with a fifth due shortly, and an extended family of cousins, nephews, and nieces and their children. He is preceded in death by his parents (Max and Gussie), sister (Anna Vineberg), wife (Jackie Sherman), and youngest son (Jonathan Irving).
Irv loved to travel the world, first with Jackie and then with Lu. At age 100 he toured Mount Rushmore and took a New England cruise to see the fall color. He loved to be with family and friends, and was a contributor to a number of charities, environmental, historical foundations and political causes. He much enjoyed seeing his grandchildren and great-grandchildren regularly upon their recent moves to Southern California.
A Celebration of Life will be held November 6th at the Harborside Restaurant in Newport Beach, CA.
