Isabel Piczek Obituary

November 14, 1927 - September 29, 2016 Isabel Helen Piczek, world-renowned ecclesiastical and sacred artist, passed away peacefully in her home in Echo Park, California on September 29, 2016 at the age of 88. She was born in Hatvan, Hungary on November 14, 1927 to Zoltan and Elona Piczek. Her father Zoltan was a noted artist and art professor. Isabel graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts in Budapest and in addition to being a world class artist also became an internationally known Physicist, recognized for her study of the Shroud of Turin. Just after the end of World War II, Isabel and her sister fled the Communist regime in Hungary and escaped across the border into Austria. They continued on to Rome which would become their home for the next three years. Declining a scholarship to move to Paris, Isabel and her sister briefly lived in Canada before making the decision to come to America in 1956. They soon established their Studio, the Construction Art Center, in Echo Park close to downtown Los Angeles. It is here that Isabel continued to live and create art for over 50 years. In 1992, Isabel along with her sister Edith was honored by Pope John Paul II in recognition of her prolific artistic achievements and Cardinal Roger Mahony, Archbishop of Los Angeles, conferred on Piczek admission into the Pontifical Order of Saint Gregory and the title Dame of Saint Gregory, making her one of only 70 Knights and Dames throughout the world who hold this honor. Isabel's art and research has touched the lives of millions of people around the world. Her legacy lives on through her extraordinary work. Funeral Mass and celebration of life will be held on Thursday October 13, 2016 at 10:30 a.m. at Mission San Fernando Rey -15151 San Fernando Mission Blvd, Mission Hills, CA 91345.

I had the fortune to meet Isabel. I was inspired by her deep love for creating scared art. She truly was a great artist. I bow to her work and life.

Isabel Piczek, an amazing artist, who, with her sister Edith, are unique examples of women artists working in California since the 1950s.
It is quite appropriate to see their work featured with many other non-religious based artists who worked here at that same time. Particularly, as women, finding their way in a very male dominated art world at that time.
Their contribution to art, modernism and design is significant, going hand in hand with the now internationally recognized Post WWII contemporary modern architecture that defines the era typified in Art and Architecture's Case Study homes.

Thank you for rendering language of understanding and Opening my Eye in the Resurrection
Until that day when we meet at Jesus's feet. Your faith in Him was illustrated in the Glory of His Resurrection that you described in the Shroud of His burial.

From thence, the New Creation went for. The Resurrection was an event Horizon

When I learned of Isabel's passing, my heart ached in a way it hadn't for some years. It brought to mind all of the wonderful times we all shared together . We all lost a beautiful friend. We all grieve. We trust that as one part of the Body suffers it all suffers, but as one part rejoices it all rejoices.
I know she is rejoicing w the angels.

Isabel was not only a Monumental artist and, a Partical Physicist, she was our dearest friend. R.I.P. Dear Lady! You are in our future, not our past. So, we will meet again! Love Tom and Donna D'Muhala

Isabel was a wonderful friend. We were fellow researchers on the Shroud of Turin and metin 1989 in Paris, France at an international conference on the Shroud. We have been friends ever since. She was a remarkable person and a true prodigy. She was reading at age two! She and her sister Edith painted a 400 square foot mural in the Vatican library at age 14! She told her beloved father at age two that she would be the "painter of the resurrection" and indeed she was and was reflected in all her work. I love you Isabel, rest in peace, may you be face to face with our savior who was the subject of your life.

Our pastor Msgr. James Gehl asked us how we could improve our Eucharistic chapel. We recommended Isabel as we were familiar with her work at the retreat center for the Society Devoted to the Sacred Heart. Little did we know of the vast talent she shared with the world. We are blessed to have Isabel design two windows in the Eucharistic Chapel at St. Euphrasia in Granada Hills, CA. Thank you for your gift of love & talent we will remember you always.
