James Butler Obituary

Butler, James G.
James G. Butler, 84, Trial Lawyer, art patron, political activist, father to nine children and four grandchildren died in his home in Hancock Park on Thursday May 26, 2005. He was a graduate of St. Patrick's HS in Elizabeth NJ, and St. Peter's College. In 1943 he enlisted in the Marine Air Corps, and was promoted to Lieutenant JG. He served as a pilot in the Pacific theater and was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross, Air Medal, three Gold Stars and five citations for bravery. He retired a Captain from the USMC Reserves in 1951. He graduated from Georgetown Law School in 1947. He then moved to Compton, CA where he was elected City Attorney. He helped found the NAACP in Compton and served as a Vice President of the organization in the early 1950's. He entered private practice as a plaintiff's attorney in 1958 and became a prominent expert in Aviation Law, Medical and Pharmaceutical Malpractice. He served as Counsel for the ACLU during the 1960s. He was a founding member of the Inner Circle of Advocates. Together with his wife Eugenia, he was an early patron of the contemporary art movement and an avid collector of contemporary art. He served as a Board Member of the Lannan Foundation on its literary comittee from 1988 to 1991 when he became a Director Emeritus. He was a lover of people, ideas and freedom. His enterprise, intensity and brilliance made him a formidable opponent and a leading light in the areas of his interest. He is survived by his children: Eugenia Perpetua Butler, Felicita Therese Butler-Quero, Cecilia Margret Dan, James Girard Butler, Jr, Sean Thomas Butler, Justin Benedict Butler, Megan Mary Butler, Maeve Veronica Butler, and Aeon "Rick" Flannery and his grandchildren: Corazon Del Sol, Chloe Alexandra Butler Dan, Emma Caroline Dan and Alexandra Erin Butler. A Memorial Service will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, June 5, 2005 at Callanan Mortuary, 1301 Western Ave. Los Angeles, CA 90027. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Henry Miller Memorial Library, Highway 1, Big Sur, CA 93920; (831) 667-2574. Callanan Mortuary (800)901-0090
