The family of James Rochester Knapp, known to all as Jim, celebrates the life of a man whose legacy is etched in the foundations of Southern California, but whose greatest joy was rooted in his home and family. Jim's 89 remarkable years were defined by an unwavering faith, a generous heart, a sharp intellect, and a famously witty spirit.
Born in
San Bernardino, California, Jim's roots ran deep in the Golden State. It was there he met the love of his life, Sally Diane Dewar. Their story carried them both to Palo Alto, where they attended Stanford University, leading to their marriage in September, 1958. After moving to San Francisco, Jim earned his law degree from Hastings College of Law, marking the beginning of a distinguished career.
Jim began his law practice with Kindel and Anderson in Santa Ana before joining a group of close friends-Herb Kalmbach, Frank DeMarco, and Sherwood Chillingworth-to found the Newport Beach firm Kalmbach, DeMarco, Knapp and Chillingworth. He transitioned from law to become a pioneering force in Southern California real estate development, shaping the region's landscape with his work at Dunn Properties and Pacific Enterprises.
In 1973, Jim founded Brookhollow, a company that became a family affair. As its Chairman and strategic advisor, he found immense satisfaction in creating deals alongside his sons and, later, several grandsons, instilling in them the same principles of hard work and integrity that guided his own life.
While his professional accomplishments were vast, Jim's commitments to his community were just as profound. He was a dedicated servant, lending his wisdom to many organizations, including the boards of Hoag Hospital and Harbor Day School, as well as Bankers Life of Nebraska. He was a Founding Member of both The Pacific Club and Big Canyon Country Club, and served as an officer of Pacific Enterprises.
Jim and Sally cherished their marriage of 68 years, traveling the world together, yet always prioritizing time with their growing family. His deep Christian faith was a cornerstone of his existence; he loved reading his Bible, listening to respected Christian leaders, and attending Mariners Church. His intellect and wit made him a compelling companion, and his generosity was quiet but constant, making an impact on countless lives.
Jim is survived by his beloved wife, Sally Knapp, and their enduring family: children Angi Evans (Pete), Greg Knapp (Vida), and Tommy Knapp (Bethany); his niece Donna Miller; his cherished grandchildren Robert Knapp (Jillian), James Peter "J.P." Knapp, Clayton Knapp (Lauren), Wilson Knapp (Elise), Lance Knapp (Maggie), Samantha Knapp Meek (Brenden), Sally Evans, Charlie Evans, and George Knapp; and five great-grandchildren, Chloe, Tyler, Mason, Naomi, and Miller, with two more expected in 2026.
His service will be held at Mariners Church on Monday, December 15 at 10:30 in the morning. A private burial will take place at Pacific View Memorial Park . The family finds peace in the knowledge that a good and faithful man has completed his journey and is now home.
