Jan Levinson Obituary

Jan Shutan Levinson passed away peacefully on Thursday, October 7th. Born in Los Angeles to Henry & Shirley Dottenheim, she was always a New Yorker at heart. Jan was ageless, in every sense of the word. Whether it was her vitality, her infectious spirit, her love of life, or the way she dressed, her elegance was always emulated and admired.Jan loved great restaurants, a great NY steak, and dirty martinis with extra olive juice on the side. She was the consummate party host and entertaining promised warmth, great food, laughter, and interesting guests. She was known for always punctuating anything worth touting about as, "The Best!"Her career was launched on her honeymoon in 1955, after she auditioned for and won the Arthur Godfrey Talent Scout Hour as a singer. Settling in Beverly Hills to raise her family, she was a successful working actress in the 1960s and 70s, appearing in dozens of well-known commercials and making special guest spots on many popular series at the time, such as Andy Griffith, Star Trek and Charlies Angels. She has a cult-like following as a result of her guest starring role as 'Lt. Mira Romaine' on the original "Star Trek" series, the Lights of Zetar." She was also in the TV series "Sons and Daughters" – where she met and married the love of her life for 45 years, writer/producer, David Levinson. Jan loved the theatre, reading, travel, tennis, great hotels, shopping, her Golden Retriever Charlie, and her Wednesday poker game. She is survived by her children: Peter & Annie Shutan (by her then husband Robert Shutan), her step-children: Sid, Melissa and Amy Levinson – as well as her grandchildren: Tess, Mira, Emilio, Santiago & Mia. Loving spouses include: Amy, Manny and Carmen. A private Celebration of Life will be held on Sunday, November 14th, 2021. For details, contact the family. Beautiful lady and a fine actress. Loved you as "cousin" Gloria on The Andy Griffith Show.

As a child, I was in front of our television the evening Star Trek premiered, in Sep 1966. I was 11, and already a fan of sci-fi; Clarke, Bradbury, Asimov...

I just rewatched the episode, The Lights of Zetar, featuring Jan Shutan. Her acting in it was superb, and of course it is realized that there was much more to her than her acting. It was a joy to see her again in the episode.

As a child I remember watching Ms. Shutan on
Star Trek. I remember being mesmerized by her
beauty! All these years later I still think about her.
That is what brought me here!

My children noticed Jan smiled just like Liz Montgomery. She even wiggles her nose in the Andy Griffith show! What a treasure. Thanks for sharing your many memorable performances with us and adding a touch of class to every scene.

My condolences for your entire family. Much respect for her memory. One I never met in person yet, one whose memory shines still and will continue, in the future.
