Janet Gardiner Obituary

August 31, 1924 - October 16, 2016 Janet Peters Gardiner passed away peacefully in her sleep on October 16th at the Canterbury retirement community where she lived for the past six years. She was born in Cleveland, Ohio to her parents James Wilton Peters and Marion Hilton Peters. Janet grew up in New Canaan, Ct. where she attended grammar and high school. Growing up there she developed a lifelong love of horses which continued all the way up to this year's Olympic equestrian events. Janet graduated from Colby-Sawyer College in 1944 and from Skidmore in 1946. In November of of 1948 she married Richard Gardiner with whom she raised three sons: Douglas, Robert and William. Douglas preceded her in death in 2008. Janet and Dick enjoyed a thirty year career in the Navy together which included interesting tours abroad in England and Italy. In Italy she enjoyed joining the other wives from the Sixth Fleet staff following the flagship to various ports of call throughout the Mediterranean. After retirement they enjoyed numerous trips throughout the world that included visits to China, Japan, Russia, Australia, New Zealand and Alaska. The family moved to Palos Verdes, Ca. in 1976 where Dick worked for TRW. Janet and Dick were longtime members of the Palos Verdes Golf Club where she served one year as the President of the Ladies Golf Club. She was also a longtime volunteer for Meals on Wheels in the San Pedro area. Janet is survived by her husband of 67 years Richard and two sons Robert and William. She is also survived by her sister Shirley Hutchison of Middleburg, Va. and her brother James Peters of Reisterstown, Md. Janet was 92 years young. She will be sorely missed by all who knew her.
