Jay Goldberg Obituary
Born in Akron, Ohio, in 1935 to Morris and Anna Goldberg, his family, including older sister Arlene, moved to Los Angeles in the mid 1940s. He graduated from Fairfax High in 1952 before attending UCLA and soon began a career in private business.
A fixture in the Southern California tire community, he joined brothers Stan and Arnie Sperling in 1969 to help operate the successful chain of stores named Globe Tire. He was also involved in the National Tire Dealers and Retreaders Association for over 50 years.
Jay dedicated much of his free time to community-service, including community organizing for Valley Organized in Community Efforts and One LA, as well as serving on public safety committees for the Toluca Lake Neighborhood Council. As he neared retirement, Jay became active in many charity-based organizations, most notably the Valley Family Center, where he served on its board for 19 years to help provide resources for under-served families and women in the San Fernando Valley.
In addition to his family, friends and community involvement, his interests included a love for photography and classical music and a passion for collecting. He was also an avid fan of the Los Angeles Dodgers, going to games for over five decades as a season-ticket holder, albeit with a never-ending supply of reading material to consume between innings.
He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Trudy Goldberg; his daughter Melissa Goldberg; sons Paul and David Goldberg and daughters-in-law Jenn and Denise; grandchildren Dakota, Adrian, Luke, Cameron and Dylan Goldberg; nephew Lee Cobin and wife Rachel and niece Susan Cobin and husband Randall. He was preceded in death by his sister Arlene Cobin and his son Michael Goldberg.
