Jeannette MAZURKI Obituary

MAZURKI, Jeannette (Lindner) Jeannette Mazurki, long time Glendale resident, died December 15th in Santa Monica. She was 89. Born May 7, 1921 in Chicago, Jeannette graduated Glendale High School in 1939 and Glendale College in 1941. She was working as a model and writing a weekly column for the Glendale News-Press called "Campus Chatter" when Charlie Henshaw, then city editor, asked her to find him a copy boy. Charlie recalled, "She shook the foundations of the city room by asking for the job, and she got it." She was hired by the News Press and was featured in "Ripley's Believe It Or Not" as the nation's first girl copy boy. She served over 30 years as Motion Picture Editor and syndicated columnist for Copley Newspapers. During her career, she interviewed most of the stars of motion pictures and television. Her by-line stories were carried by Copley News Service to more than 500 papers across the nation. She met her first husband, well known character actor, Mike Mazurki, interviewing him for a story. They had two daughters, Mannette and Michelle.
She was also active in politics, as an instructor for the Glendale Parliamentary Club and founding the Young Republican Women's Club of Glendale, serving as President when Nixon was elected President, who she worked tirelessly to help elect as a campaign organizer. She retired to Chicago in 1981 after marrying Albert Lindner, her grammar school boyfriend. She returned to California after Albert's death to be near her daughters. Jeannette is listed in "Who's Who of American Women." She was a member of the Glendale Presbyterian Church. She is survived by her daughter, Michelle of Santa Monica. Per her request, there will be no services. There will be a celebration of her life in February. Donations in her name can be made to the Morris Animal Foundation, 10200 E. Girard Ave., Ste. B430, Denver, CO 80231.

My name is Helen Hed Dowlin and I knew Jeanette during those News-Press days in the 1940s. I also became a copy boy a few years after her. She knew my brother, Charles Hed, who was assistant sports editor. He died in World War 2 the week that I graduated from Glendale High School. When he died, Charles Hushaw offered me the copy boy job. I later was on the Editorial staff as church editor, service men stories and I wrote the obituries. I also knew Mike Mazurki through Jeanette. So as you see, I knew Jeanette very well in those early years. I offer you my prayers and thoughts at thiis time, I very much would like to be notified about the February celebration as I would like to attend. Helen Dowlin
