Jerry Albus Obituary

August 3, 1937 - February 8, 2024 Dr. Jerry Joseph Albus, age 86, of Santa Monica, California passed away peacefully on Thursday, February 8, 2024. He was born to Stanley and Norma (Bauer) Albus on August 3, 1937 in Detroit, Michigan. Jerry was full of determination and overcame many obstacles. He became an Eagle Scout. He was told to go to a trade school because he would not do well in high school. Jerry convinced the principal that he could succeed. Not only did Jerry graduate high school, he became senior class president and captain of the football team. Jerry graduated from the University of Detroit Mercy and next, from its School of Dentistry. He was then drafted to the Navy as a dentist in San Diego, California. After serving in the Navy, Jerry opened a dental practice in Burbank/Toluca Lake, California, where he practiced dentistry for 45 years. He was also an assistant clinical professor at the UCLA School of Dentistry.
Anyone who knew Jerry would agree that he had a talent for talking that matched his talent for listening. He loved trains. On Christmas he would connect his Lionel train set on which his Union Pacific Big Boy steam locomotive model would ride around the living and dining rooms. He volunteered at the Los Angeles Live Steamers Railroad Museum in Griffith Park, CA.
Jerry loved the outdoors and enjoyed a myriad of activities including backpacking, snow skiing, golfing, gardening, rollerblading to work, cycling, and building bonfires. Jerry's cottage cheese pancakes were famous with family and friends.
He is survived by his wife Alice, his 4 children - Paul, Carolyn, Laura, and John, and his 10 grandchildren –Angelo, Gabrielle, Grace, Jacob, Joseph, Kaitlyn, Matthew, Nathaniel, Nicholas, and Rachel. He is also survived by 5 brothers and sisters - Tom, Charles, Michael, Mary, and Carol, along with many nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends.
Jerry was much loved and will be greatly missed.

I was a patient of Dr Albus for many years. He was more than my dentist, he was my friend. On Saturdays, he would rollerblade to work. May he rest in peace.

When my husband Andrew and I arrived in California around 1979, I woke up--inevitably-- with a monster toothache one Saturday morning. We had just moved into our apartment in Burbank, and slept on the floor, surrounded by boxes. The job we came west for had just fallen through. We knew not one soul. The pain (infected cavity) tore me out of sleep around 6 AM, and I desperately grabbed the Yellow Pages, under "dentist." ALBYS was the first listing and I called. A sunny Midwestern voice answered. It was Jerry. He said the office was closed (he was doing some bookkeeping), but since I was in pain, he invited me to come right over. This was his older office, not the one beside PATY's diner. I arrived in tears, explaining that I had no money. He listened patiently, then patted my nose with a cotton ball. Then he calmly examined my teeth, saw the problem, explained what could be done and what it would cost, and offered to do it with the understanding that I would pay when I could. AN hour later, my tooth was filled, the pain was gone, and I cried as I walked home to Pass Ave., this time in gratitude. I have never met a kinder soul. I was a loyal patient until he sold to practice. I loved Dr. Albus. We shared a quirky love for the movie "Eraserhead"! RIP, dear friend.

I was a patient of Jerry´s for many years since 1989. Truly the best dentist! He always had a smile on his face and could even make you smile while he was working on filling a cavity. I´m going to miss him so much. His gentle touch. A true genius in the dentistry field. Until we meet again, rest in peace Dr.Albus. I know you have everyone smiling in heaven!
