Jerry Dunphy Obituary

Dunphy, Jerry Beloved father, grandfather and great grandfather passed away Monday, May 20th. Dunphy was the "dean" of news in Southern California for more than four decades. Born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin and raised in Chicago, Illinois, Dunphy started his broadcast career in Madison, Wisconsin in 1947. From there, he worked in radio news and sports, first serving as a News Director in Wichita, Kansas in 1953. In 1960, it was on to "The Big News" in Los Angeles at television station KNX-TV, now KCBS-TV as the lead anchor of the first hour long newscast in the nation. With Dunphy at the helm, it became the highest rated local newscast in history. In his 42 years on the air in Los Angeles, Dunphy was an anchorman for KCBS, KABC and currently KCAL-TV. In his early years, America called Gerald R. Dunphy to serve in World War II. As a B-29 squadron bombardier, he flew 29 combat missions over Japan and shot down two enemy planes. For his service to his country, Dunphy received the Distinguished Flying Cross, an Air Medal with 3 oak leaf clusters and two presidential unit citations. An accomplished lyricist, Dunphy wrote the lyrics for more than 300 songs, some of which were performed by entertainers like Wayne Newton, T.G. Shepard and George Bugatti. At the time of his death, Dunphy was working on several music and television related projects. He made guest appear-ances in more than 80 movies and television shows like "Roseanne", "Independence Day" and "Bullworth". Jerry Dunphy is survived by six children (Jerry Jr., Karen, Linda, Tad, Megan and Erin), six grandchildren (Wendy, Daniel, Kristina, Megancarole, Courtney and Lauren) and one great-grandaughter Emily.
There will be a funeral mass at St. Cyril's Catholic Church in Encino followed by a private interment.

As a natives of Los Angeles County, my siblings & I grew up watching Jerry Dunphy broadcast news here, as he went from one TV station to another. He truly was L.A.'s "news icon", and his broadcasts will be sorry missed by all who share that view. Some of us saw & heard him more often than we did our own relatives, so he indeed became part of our families. I am moving "to the desert", and used to live near "the sea", and to the Dunphy family, all of us in those areas and "all of Southern California" share your loss.
