John Cloer Obituary

Cloer, John William "Bill"
Passed away on December 28, 2002 after a brief but intense battle with esophageal cancer. He died at home surrounded by his loving family. He was born on January 3, 1929 in Long Beach, California to Horace William and Madge Cloer, but was raised in Sonora, Arkansas. He married Joan Somers in 1951 and they had four children: Kathleen Ross, Carol Cloer, Sharon Clauson and William Edward "Bill" Cloer. Joan preceded him in death in 1973. Bill married Mary (Bonnie) Palm in 1978 and loved and raised her five children: Kevin Palm, Hilary Scully, Caitlin Trussell, Nathan Palm and Elizabeth Eicher. He was a devoted grandfather to 17 grandchildren: Kerry Ross; Sarah, Emily and Anna Clauson; Heather Prado and John Cloer; Robert, Hannah and Bryn Scully; Camden, Noah and Lindsay Palm; Quinn and Taryn Trussell; Jake, Chase and Alexis Palm. Bill served in the United States Army from 1950 to 1952. He was a fellow of the American Society of Pension Actuaries and a past president of that organization. His impressive career included President of Beneficial Life Pension Services, a Partner of Howard Johnson Consulting Actuaries, and founder and CEO of Cloer & Leggette Ltd. in Sydney, Australia. He is survived by his four siblings: Bob Cloer, Gene Cloer, Savanna McCain and Edward Cloer. He will be remembered for his faith, kindness, generosity and wit. A memorial service will be held at the Pasadena Church of Christ on Saturday, January 4th at 10 am, where he served as an elder for many years. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Pasadena Church of Christ (1727 Kinneloa Canyon Rd., Pasadena 91107) or Odyssey Hospice (43725 Monterey Ave. Palm Desert 92260). Private burial will be at Riverside National Cemetery.
