John McGhee Obituary

May 3, 1930 - November 8, 2015 John Easton McGhee, 85, passed away peacefully on November 8, 2015, at his home in Pasadena, California, with his wife Carol by his side. He was born on May 3, 1930, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, to John Francis McGhee and Katherine Easton McGhee. John spent his early years in Crafton, Pennsylvania, and Ottawa Hills, Ohio, before moving to Beverly Hills, California, at the age of 8. He attended Beverly Hills High School for two years and graduated from The Lawrenceville School in New Jersey in 1948. After high school he attended University of California at Berkeley, where he was a member of Alpha Delta Phi Fraternity, and received a degree in Business Administration. It was there that he met the love of his life, Carol McLean; they were married in Del Monte, California, in February, 1952. John joined the Navy and served two years active duty during the Korean War, stationed in San Diego, California, and Yokosuka, Japan; he was discharged in 1954. He began work for Container Corporation in sales before embarking on a 35-year career as a stockbroker with the firm of Lester, Ryan & Company in Pasadena, California. John and Carol were happily married for 63 years, longtime residents of San Marino and Pasadena. John was an avid golfer into his early 80s and enjoyed playing dominos and bridge with friends. He also served terms as President of San Gabriel Country Club, Seniors Golf Association of Southern California and the Pasadena Bond Club. He had a fond affiliation with Huntington Hospital's H.E.A.R.T., supporting cardiac rehabilitation, as one of its founders in 1995 and continuous contributors. John was preceded in death by his father John Francis McGhee in 1941, his mother Katherine Easton Norris in 1983, and his stepfather Dr. William J. Norris in 1987. He is survived by his wife Carol, daughter Suzanne (Rick) Mork of San Marino, California, son David (Leslie) McGhee of Meadow Vista, California, and son Michael McGhee of Dana Point, California, as well as his sister Ann Zink of Calistoga, California, brother Andrew McGhee of Chicago, Illinois, stepsisters Nancy Burris of Altadena, California, and Virginia (George) Dickinson of Los Angeles, California. Affectionately known as Bapa, John had seven grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. A memorial service will be held at San Marino Community Church at ll:00a.m. on February 12th. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to Huntington Hospital H.E.A.R.T, 100 W. California Blvd, Pasadena, CA 91105 or Children's Hospital, 4650 Sunset Blvd, Los Angeles, CA 90027.

We will so much miss John's always positive and most uplifting spirit. Someone who you would want to be next to because he was very warm and would always make you feel so good. His most affable smile will always be in our heart and mind.

Carol, Suzy, David, Michael and the whole family: Our prayers are with you; and our deep gratitude to Our Lord for giving us the blessing of having had John in our lives. May He hold him now in His Kingdom and may He shower you with His most comforting peace, knowing that John is now with Our Lord in his eternal rest.
