John G. Milner, Professor Emeritus USC School of Social Work, died at home of bladder cancer.

John was born in Twin Falls, Idaho, the youngest son of the Pioneer Founding Fathers Milner family. After graduation from high school, he attended the University of Idaho, and graduated from Stanford University in 1934. He attended the New York School of Social Work and graduated in 1936.

He was inducted in the U.S. Army in 1942 and served as a psychologist for the Army General Hospital, serving in New Caledonia, Fiji Islands and India. His honors and awards include the student award for distinguised faculty member of the year; the California chapter of the National Assn. of Social Workers "Educator of the year" in 1975.

In 1988 friends and former students established the John Milner Professorship in Child Welfare at the USC School of Social Work. After retiring, he kept active, serving on several committees and giving many lectures. He was truly a very special man. He will be sorely missed by his family, friends, colleagues and students. "To know his is to love him".

I was my Unkie's great niece, or in other words, he was my mom's uncle. He was always an inspiration to me and my children in every way. I still have those special paintings that he painted when my kids were born. He inspired me to be the best I can be. He made my life such a better place and his words encouraged me in all aspects. He would love being in our lives always. We had so much fun at every holiday, either at my home or at my moms. I miss him so much and love him more than ever. I was blessed and honored to have him as my great uncle. He touched everyone's lives in every way. I loved him so much, and still do. What a special man he was.
