John Moffitt Obituary

Moffitt, John P.
John Paul Moffitt passed away peacefully at his home on the evening of October 17, 2003. A Pacific Palisades resident for over 30 years, John was born in Compton, California on October 12, 1942 to Enid Ruth (Limber) and Robert Allen Moffitt, both deceased. John was brother to Christine Marie Moffitt of Moscow, Idaho. John and his wife of 39 years, Linda (Holte), met as high school students at Earl Warren High School in Downey, California. John attended Occidental College in Los Angeles, where he was student body president and an active member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon. John went on to graduate first in his class at California Western School of Law. He enjoyed the practice of law for over 37 years, making a happy and fulfilling career out of his true passion in life. He retired recently from the firm of Moffitt, Weagant & Loo. His past volunteer activities include; president of the Bel-Air Bay Club, a member of the St. Matthew's Board of Trustees, and a member of the Occidental College William Stewart Young Society. Beyond his role as a professional lawyer, John was a counselor to many. For decades he provided pro bono legal services and common sense guidance to friends and family with a rare kindness, wisdom and generosity of spirit. His optimism abounded, bringing good humor and laughter to every life he touched. John and Linda raised two children, Monique, 34, and Robert 31. A devoted family man, John valued time with his wife and children whom he loved dearly, making them a constant priority in his life. From trips to Mammoth Lakes, to weekends at the beach, John appreciated the outdoors and the beauty of his native California. He and Linda enjoyed taking walks, riding bikes, fishing and gardening. They were life companions and the best of friends, happiest when together. A memorial service will be held at 4 pm, Monday, October 27 at St. Matthew's Episcopal Church. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to: UCLA Jonsson Comprehensive Center, Urologic Cancer Research, UCLA School of Medicine, Le Conte Boulevard, Los Angeles 90024 or St. Matthew's Parish School Financial Aid Fund, 1031 Bienveneda Avenue, Pacific Palisades, CA 90272. Linda, Monique and Robert,

My deepest sympathies are with you at this difficult time. Linda, having you as a friend in junior high and on and sharing experiences in our early married years as well as sharing playtimes with Merrell and Monique remain in my memory and heart. It was a joy to know and work with John in high school and, again, to share dinners and get-togethers with you two over the years. You are in my thoughts and prayers.

John and Linda were usher and bridesmaid in my in 1962 wedding. We were the best of friends in high school. John graciously volunteered his services and set up a trust fund for my children when my husband died in 1972. Optimistic, generous, warm, caring

are all traits that belonged to John. If we each embodied a little of John's essence, the world would be a better place.

Dear Linda and family,

What a beautiful obituary this is for John. I know that he touched many lives, and that you will miss him dearly. I'm sure that his battle with cancer was very difficult, but Dean said he handled it with grace and dignity. You are in our thoughts and prayers as you prepare for his funeral.

As we move through life's journey many people touch us, even if in some small way, and each one of those adds a little bit to our personality, our character and our soul. All of those encounters help to make us who we are and when its time for those to move on I know that part of that person remains within me.

John is a great guy and I'm grateful

his life crossed my path.

We all knew what kind of a man John would become after high school because he dis-

played his character every day as a leader and friend in high school. I worked with John in student government where I saw his leadership abilities at work. He was one of those people whom you knew you'd be glad someday to say, "I knew him as a kid."

I was one of the lucky ones to have know John. Kindness, generosity, gentleness and sincerity were only a few of the qualities he possessed. May wonderful memories sustain Linda and their children through this difficult time and know what a blessing he was to so many.

Dear Linda and Family,

I will be sending a card etc, but this is a nice way to let you know that Bob and I will be keeping you in our thoughts and prayers today and in the coming months as you adjust to a different life. Bob and I still laugh sometimes when we think of the time you lived above us at the apartment when you and John were first married. It was a good time with little responsibility. Alot has happened since then. Homes, children, jobs, new friends, etc. But old friendships are hard to break. Please know that we love you and are feeling for you in you grief. Since we live so far, we will not beable to be at the service in body, but we are with you in spirit.

All Our Love,

Judy and Bob
