Jose Cueto Obituary

Jose Manuel Cueto, MD

Passed away on January 28, 2011 at age 86, in the comfort of his home surrounded by his loving family. He was born in Yaguajay, Santa Clara, Cuba, on November 5, 1924, and graduated at the top of his class from the University of Havana in 1949. After earning a medical scholarship, Dr. Cueto came to the United States in 1952 with his wife, Nora, where he opened his practice in Detroit, Michigan. He enlisted and served as a LT. CMDR in the U.S. Navy Medical Corps from 1957 to 1959. Most of his medical career was spent as a Family Practitioner, Ob/Gyn, and surgeon in Santa Ana, CA. His patients were cared for with the highest professional and personal standards, regardless of their ability to pay.
He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Nora, five children, 12 grandchildren, four great-grandchildren and his four siblings, as well as a large extended family. He was the patriarch and role model to many, in addition to being a pillar in the community, and will be sorely missed by all whom he touched.
As a result of his profound belief in the power of education, in lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Jose and Nora Cueto Educational Fund at the Orange County Community Foundation, at 4041 MacArthur Blvd., Suite #510, Newport Beach, CA 92660 or www.oc-cf.org.

On behalf of Harbor Day School, and especially the class of '99 who, as fifth graders, dreamed the impossible dream, that began with a message in a bottle, and raised funds to bring Luis and Miriam to freedom from Santa Clara Province, in March 1996 straight into the welcoming arms of Dr and Mrs.Cueto, THANK YOU.

I shall never forget the late evening phone call offering them a home the day before that poignant moment at John Wayne Airport with all the press and TV crews, capturing a story that made a deep impression, even to this day, on those eleven year old kids, about the kindness of strangers - themselves, yes, and the Cueto family.

The common bond Dr. and Mrs.Cueto shared with Luis and Miriam, also being exiled from Santa Clara Province, began an enduring friendship. What your family did to ease their transition into American life was nothing short of a miracle... not just then, but for almost fifteen years.

We are especially grateful to Dr. Cueto for arranging for the complex surgeries for their grandson aged 8 when he came two years later, enabling him to live a normal, active life.

Ours is only one of many stories from grateful strangers who became Dr.Cueto's friends. He was a gentle gentleman of full measure, indeed. He will be sorely missed but never forgotten because so many will keep his memory and legacy alive with stories such as ours.

In deepest sympathy, Judy

My grandfather, "Pop," was such a wonderful man. He was very well respected, as a doctor throughout the community and as a loving patriarch to so many member of our family, both immediate and extended. I am forever endebted to him for the many sacrifices he made in order for those he loved to have a bright and promising future. He had a great sense of humor and the softest hands ever to exist on anyone. To say that he will be missed dearly does not even begin to touch on the void that is left with his passing. Thank you, Pop, for everything. You will forever be in my heart. Te quiero mucho Abuelo.

My heart aches. He was not only a beloved uncle but my doctor for many many years. He always had a smile and something comical to say about what was ailing me. I have never found a doctor nor will I ever find a doctor that cared as much as he did. You will be missed Tio. My prayers and love to all my cousins and my beautiful Tia Nora.
