Joyce Ludmer Obituary

August 4, 1931 - August 17, 2022 Joyce Olga Pellerano Ludmer, 91, of West Los Angeles, passed away peacefully August 17th. Joyce was born in New York City to Maria Teresa and Emmanuele (Charlie) Pellerano on August 4,1931. Beloved wife of the late Michael Ludmer, Joyce is survived by her sister Madeline Lennon (Thomas), and was the adored mother of Paul, Jon, Mark, and daughter-in-laws, Robin and Terri, grandmother of Evan (Jess), Mara (Max), and Ian, and great-grandmother of Owen.
Joyce graduated from CUNY and got her Masters from UCLA. She was Head of the UCLA Art Library for 20 years. After her "retirement" from UCLA, she became the Senior Bibliographer at the Getty Research Institute. She was a published Art History Scholar.
Family always came first and this inspires her family to this day. Loved ones from the USA, Canada, Italy, and Brazil had a special place in Joyce's heart. She loved hosting meals with her Italian cooking from family recipes.
A Funeral Mass celebrating Joyce's life will be held on September 9 at 10 am, Chapel of the Holy Redeemer, Holy Cross Cemetery, Culver City. In lieu of flowers, please donate to a charity meaningful to you in Joyce's name.

I am saddened to hear about Joyce's passing. We worked together at the Getty. Joyce was a cheerful person and I always enjoyed her company. My sincere condolences to her family.

Joyce was always unfailingly upbeat whenever I had the opportunity, not often enough, to visit her and my brother Mike. Wish I had sampled more of her fabulous Italian cuisine!

Joyce was a longtime member of ARLIS/NA and the Southern California Chapter and was the President of ARLIS/NA in 1979. She was the Head of the UCLA Art Library for twenty years. She "retired," but then went to work at the Getty Research Institute as Senior Bibliographer. Joyce was a mentor to me and a friend; she encouraged me to volunteer as Chair of the 1985 ARLIS/NA conference held in Los Angeles and "held my hand" through the challenging months of planning. Joyce then hosted an unforgettable party at her home, featuring her fabulous Italian cuisine, for the conference committee and other volunteers after the conference. She also participated 2004 in the chapter party held at my house in Santa Monica when we celebrated the 30th anniversary of the founding of the Southern California chapter-and also honored the chapter founder, Judith Hoffberg. We published a booklet memorializing the event and in the back of the booklet we reprinted an attendance list from the first meeting, April 5, 1974. Joyce´s name is on the list (I just looked). Attached is a picture of her from that 2004 party. I didn´t join until 1976, but I do miss those days and those comrades and Joyce´s friendship was a highlight. We accomplished an unbelievable amount without the Internet or cell phones!!

With deepest condolences to Joyce´s family,

Joan M. Benedetti
