Julian Schwab Obituary

May 9, 1921 - March 14, 2014 A native of Chicago, WWII found Julian in line to serve his country in the Armed services in Europe until war ended. A decision to enter the newly formed stenotype school led to a lifelong career as a "court" reporter. His first job was reporting the Nazi war trials in Nuremberg, Germany. (In 2013 he received recognition in honor from the U.S. Government Attorneys office for that service.) A decision to join a prestigious reporting firm in L.A. led to additional recording of historical trials including the Kefauver investigations, news worthy events of the world and finally as "reporter to the stars of Hollywood." He was an early, active member of L.A. Athletic Club. In Julian's own words on entering the new era, "As we start the 21st century, I look back with pride and satisfaction at the decisions I made and the paths I've followed. I've had a good life." Julian passed peacefully of natural causes on March 14th 2014. He is survived by his wife, Carolyne, and his sister, Ruth Gerber. A memorial service will be held in the Old North Church in Hollywood Forest Lawn on Saturday, March 29th at 12:00 noon. All friends are welcome. He was a devoted member of The Autry Museum of Western Heritage, The Huntington Library and The Los Angeles Zoo. In lieu of flowers, donations to L.A. Zoo, "c/o Glaza, Nancy Simerly" are suggested.

Another grand era has come to a close with the passing of Julian. I loved working at CHMS; I loved the people in the office, my bosses, and my fellow reporters. I am grateful to have had Julian in my life. May you rest in peace, my dear friend and mentor. Ruanne McArthur

I met Julian when I was a new reporter but it was my second career. I had no idea what it was all about. I learned fast. Julian watched out for all of us single girls and taught us about investing for retirement. He had quite a group. I thank you, Julian, my life is better for having known you.

I met Julian working as a temp in the CHMS office while waiting for the results of my CSR exam. Julian took me under his wing and hired me when I got my license. I have many memories of coming into the office after a job and having a cup of coffee and swapping stories with Julian. He he an ascerbic wit and a very pragmatic outlook on our profession and life in general. I miss those days, and send my deep sympathy to his wife, Carolyne, and his sister, Ruth. Rest in peace.

I began my career with CHMS in 1978 working in the office as I attended court reporting school and then went on to be a part of the CHMS family as a court reporter. My first depo as a CSR was sitting in with Julian and there I learned what an experienced, professional court reporter was all about. I will always be thankful to have known Julian and will remember him fondly.

I knew evenbefore starting court reporting school that I wanted to work at CHMS, and that finally happened in 1980. Somehow you have a gut feel for what will become life-changing events.
Julian mentored me as a baby reporter not only in court reporting but in finances, in investing, and may other ways. I always enjoyed our afternoon kibitzing sessions about that day's events or world events. You served your profession well.
I miss you and all those moments. Wherever you are now, please give my best to Anita, David and Tom Kelly, and the others we have lost over the years.
My best to Carolyn and your sister

I joined the CHMS family in 1976 and stayed there 17-1/2 years, during which time I learned a great deal from Julian. He was a court reporter's reporter and respected by everyone. My deepest sympathies to his wife, Carolyn.

Julian was recently a topic of discussion between Vi Taylor (CHMS family member) and myself wondering how he was. It had been two years since I had any news. My hope was to try and get in touch. I'm saddened by the news of his passing. I joined the CHMS family in 1976 and he always had a special place in my heart and helped me through a very tough time in my life when I lost my dad to cancer. He always did have great stories and good advice. He had a good life. May he rest in peace. Love to Carolyn.

Julian always had a story to tell, and as a new court reporter back in 1982 when I joined the CHMS family, I loved to listen and had so much to learn. Thanks for all your guidance.

I met Julian in 1984 when I came to CHMS hoping to work as a court reporter. Many fond memories of those days. Julian told me stories of the famous trials he reported, which I found fascinating. Rest in peace.
