Julie Cerny Obituary

August 29, 1947 - May 15, 2015 Julie was born Julie Gale Aldrich to Sam and Jeanne Aldrich, in Los Angeles. After graduating from Palisades High, she obtained a degree in anthropology from San Fernando State College and a Masters in Public Health from UCLA. She loved sharing a meal with friends, music, reading, movies, and so much more. Julie worked at the American Cancer Society as director of professional education. She married Ross Cerny in 1984. As their daughter Laura attended preschool, Julie was asked to join the teaching staff. Julie taught preschool for almost twenty-five years, first at Temple Isaiah Preschool and then at A Kid's Place. Julie absolutely loved working with the hundreds of children, their parents and her co-teachers whom she came to know and love - and she let all of them know it. Julie died following a brief sudden illness. She was always concerned about helping people, nurturing good nutrition and good health for individuals and communities. A donation to either Friends of Zenger Farm or the American Lung Foundation is the kind of thing that would make her smile. Ross and Laura, Julie's sisters Shelley and Susie, her in-laws, nieces and nephews, and so many, many friends, and her cats Bosco and Sprinkle will miss her forever.

There are some people you just can't believe are gone. The how and why are important, sure. But they don't touch her absence except in our collective and individual memories. God, what a woman. I married her, married the whole family back in the late sixties...in the Bel Air hotel no less. She was funny, smart, beautiful, engaged in life, in her friends, and for a while, even in me. I loved those days though sometimes I had a hard time showing it. She finally found Ross, the right guy for dead flat sure. I was blessed that Julie and I remained friends. Shock and sadness are my dancing partners now. Maybe to Scott Joplin's real, slow drag. You know...

I just learned of Julie's passing. Although I have not seen her in many years, she was one of my best friends as a teenager, and I think of her often. My heart is with Julie's family.

I was so sad to hear of Julie's passing in the paper. Although it's been years since I've been in touch, I have such fond memories of her. She was my first boss after I got my MPH. When she hired me at ACS in 1982, I got the job under the condition I changed my name to "Jay" so we wouldn't be confused. I carried that name with me for many years as when i ran into people after leaving ACS and they called me "Jay", i knew they were from my ACS days. She was a wonderful friend, mentor, boss and confidant. That job was one of the highlights of my career. My deepest sympathies to Ross and Laura and her family.
