Lissy Jarvik Obituary

March 17, 1924 - October 1, 2021 Lissy F. Jarvik, MD, PhD, a geriatric psychiatrist who was among the first to determine that "senile dementia" was not part of normal aging, and whose later work helped guide the field of Alzheimer research, died peacefully in her sleep on Friday October 1st, 2021 at the age of 97 in her home in Santa Monica. By any standard she led a remarkable life, dramatically escaping from the Nazi invasion of her native Holland during WWII to become one of the earliest researchers in the new field of neuropsychogeriatrics and a leading Alzheimer researcher. She was preceded in death by her husband of 53 years, Murray Elias Jarvik M.D., Ph.D. in 2008. She is survived by her two sons, Laurence and Jeffrey (Jerry) Jarvik, their spouses, Nancy Strickland and Gail Pairitz Jarvik, and three grandchildren, Ella, Leah and Ethan Jarvik. We were sorry to hear that your mother passed away! We would like to extend our deepest sympathy and were happy to have met her. She was vivacious and extremely peppy so nobody would have guessed her age!
