Louis J. CELLA Jr. M.D.

Louis CELLA Obituary

CELLA, JR., MD, Louis J. Passed away November 7th after a lengthy neurological illness. He was 87 years old. A thirty year resident of Palm Springs, Dr. Cella was born August 21, 1924 in Providence, Rhode Island. The son of Laura Tirrochi and Louis J. Cella, sr. MD, Dr. Cella, who had one older sister (Beatrice deceased), grew up in an old world household where his father saw patients downstairs and his mother and sister ran a dress making business from the third floor of the family home. Dr. Cella graduated from Providence College in 1945 and then attended Marquette University School of Medicine earning his MD in 1948. He would intern at the Rhode Island Hospital from 1948-1954. In 1952, Dr. Cella married Ann Margaret Morgan in Providence. The couple soon relocated to Orange County, California settling in Santa Ana. There, Dr. Cella joined the Santa Ana Clinic and began what was to be a more than thirty year private practice.
During those years, Dr. Cella was involved in numerous civic organizations including the Arthritis Foundation, Boys and Girls Club of Orange County, OC Aid-United Givers, and Goodwill Industries, among others. In the early 1960's, Dr. Cella spearheaded a group of fellow physicians in Orange County to buy and run Riverview Community Hospital in Santa Ana. This led to the development of three other doctor-owned hospitals during the county's population surge. Mission Community hospital, Fountain Valley Regional Hospital and Mercy Hospital of Santa Ana are still operating today under new ownerships. The vision and dedication to quality health care delivery in Orange County is a testimony to Dr. Cella and his colleagues. Dr. Cella was preceded in death by Ann in 1985. In 1987, he married Beverly Johnson who passed away in 2006. He is survived by two sons, Edward B. Cella of Los Angeles and L.J. Cella of Marin County (Elizabeth) and two grandchildren. The family requests no flowers and that donations be made to either the Alzheimers Foundation of Coachella Valley or UCI Medical Foundation. Private services pending.

Dr. Cella was a family friend; especially to my father Dr. David S. Ascher. It was always a pleasure speaking with the Dr. regarding politics. I was given one of my most memorable experiences by Dr Cella when I was named to go to the 1968 Democratic convention in Chicago. All my best to L. J. and Edward It has always been a profound pleasure to have known all members of Dr. Cella family.

My humble gratitude to Dr. Cella for his friendship as a young physician who with his vision and guidance allowed me to participate as a partner with him and others in the developement of those various hospitals. My sincerest condolences to his family and particularly his son, LJ, who I had the pleasure of befriending as well.

Dr. Cella was our family physician in the 60s and 70s, as our family, too, had moved from Rhode Island. He was a wonderful, kind, and generous person, and tonight I have a heavy heart in reading of his passing.
