Marcy Stein Obituary

December 20, 1928 - January 25, 2024 Marcy Stein was born December 20, 1928, and died January 25, 2024, in Pasadena, California, at the remarkable age of 95. This is a testament to a life fully lived.

Marcy was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania to Peter and Frieda Alderman. She was the last of 5 children, all of whom preceded her in death. The family moved to Los Angeles, California, where Marcy attended school. In high school, she was introduced by her brother Bernie to a fellow navy pilot. Harold Stein was Marcy's one true love. They were married on June 28, 1947, right after she graduated from high school. Marcy and Hal had three daughters, Posy, Libby (now deceased), and Beth, and a son, Peter, 12 years later.

Marcy's role of "stay at home mom" was much more than that. She organized the household, ran countless errands, and volunteered at her children's activities including assisting at the local elementary school which would later become a part-time job as a much beloved kindergarten teacher's aide. She was a girl scout leader and a cheering presence at all her children's sports events. Marcy and Hal believed that a Jewish upbringing was important to their family life. They joined Temple Judea where Marcy was a member of the sisterhood. The family regularly attended sabbath services and High Holy days, and she baked a homemade challah every Friday. Marcy's giving, welcoming nature was the reason her home became the place where all the kids would gather after high school games. There was always plenty of food-including chocolate, and candies (Marcy was known for her sweet tooth)-and lively conversation.

Marcy's favorite activities included knitting, playing Mahjong, solving crossword puzzles, growing roses, playing video poker (for years she made annual trips to Vegas with her daughter Beth), cultivating friends, and USC football. Marcy was the consummate USC Trojans fan. Hal was a USC alumnus, and a good portion of their social life centered on tailgate picnics at the Los Angeles Coliseum and trips across the country to watch her team play. In their later years, Marcy and Hal lived in Manhattan Beach where they enjoyed bicycle rides, brunch dates, and entertaining their grandchildren at the beach.
Marcy and Hal were married for 54 years when he passed away in November 2001.

Marcy is survived by her two daughters, three sons-in-law, one son and daughter-in-law, four grandsons, one granddaughter, 4 beloved great-grandchildren, two nieces, one nephew, one grandniece and nephew, two adored great-grand nieces, and many, many friends. She will be greatly missed by all the people whose lives she touched.

A funeral service is scheduled for 2:30 p.m. on January 31, 2024, at Mount Sinai Memorial Park and Cemetery.
