Mary Maack Obituary

Mary Niles Maack an award-winning scholar on the history of the book and comparative librarianship, has died of cancer at age 77. She passed away on January 23, 2023, surrounded by her husband, son, and daughter-in-law at her son's home in Massachusetts.
Mary was known for her scholarship on international comparative librarianship, the history of the book and women's history. She achieved her life's goal of becoming a tenured professor at the University of Minnesota and then UCLA, and continued teaching and writing well into retirement. She loved France and did notable work there, serving as a Fulbright Professor at the French National Library School in Villeurbanne and winning multiple competitive grants to do research at the Bibliotheque Nationale, one of her favorite places. Across her career, she had the opportunity to lecture or consult in fourteen countries, including Cameroon, Nigeria, Senegal, Kenya, France, Canada, Russia and Germany. She published important books on the history of libraries and archives in Senegal (Libraries in Senegal), women in librarianship (Aspirations in Mentoring in an Academic Environment) and women's history (Anne Morgan: Photography, Philanthropy and Advocacy). She wrote numerous articles and essays, co-edited the third edition of the Encyclopedia of Library and Information Sciences, and played important roles in the Library History Roundtable of the American Library Association, the International Federation of Library Associations, and as head of the California Center for the Book.
Her friends remember her as a kind, intelligent, generous and sensitive soul with a wise and thoughtful presence. Her passions included art, art history, poetry, botany, reading, listening to music and learning about other cultures. She loved visiting museums and attending lectures. She found ways to travel whenever she could to New York, London, and Paris to do research and in retirement went on Road Scholar tours to England, Austria, Germany, the Czech Republic, China and Tibet, Australia, and several US cities, always with a focus on learning.
Mary invested in the communities around her. She was a poet and a founder of the Westwood Presbyterian Church (WPC) Poetry Group and coordinated the WPC Women Reading series. She was also passionate about social justice. A long-time non-violent peace advocate who belonged to the Fellowship of Reconciliation, she wrote political as well as meditative poems. She opposed Vietnam and other U.S. wars during her lifetime and celebrated the Christmas cease fire during the Russia-Ukraine conflict in January 2023, shortly before her death.
Mary Niles Maack was born in Paris, Illinois on December 1945 to Augustus H. and Lillie P. Niles. She graduated Phi Beta Kappa with high honors in History from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign and earned her Masters and Doctorate of Library Science from Columbia University in New York City. She is survived by her husband of 54 years, Stephen Maack, her son Jonathan Maack, daughter-in-law Jael Maack, and two grandchildren, Reed (10) and Thea (8), whom she adored.
A memorial service will be held at 1pm on February 18th, 2023, at Westwood Presbyterian Church, Los Angeles, where she was an active member for 36 years. The service will be live-streamed on the church YouTube channel. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in her name to the American Women's History Museum, Westwood Presbyterian Church, Center for the Book at the Library of Congress, or the Fellowship of Reconciliation.

Sir,
I learned of your wife's death while I was editing Les bâtisseuses de la lecture publique, une histoire des premières femmes bibliothécaires en France entre 1900 et 1950, published by Presses de l'Enssib.

This book owes much to the research of Mary Niles Maack

Yours sincerely, Bien cordialement,

I only learned of Mary's passing today. I first met her in 1988 when I interviewed for a position at the UCLA Graduate School of Library and Information Science. Gracious and welcoming, she had a passion for the history of books, libraries, reading, and women's history, and it was a joy to discuss mutual research interests with her. When I first arrived in L.A. without furniture or a car, she took me shopping, loaned me a futon, and made sure I discovered the city's many wonderful museums. Mary loved research, but devoted many hours to mentoring colleagues and students, both formally and informally. She showed us how to achieve work-life balance as she produced award-winning work, taught classes, and yet found time to practiced yoga, participate in book groups, visit museums, and travel the world. I love what Jonathan said in his eulogy--that we should take an aspect of Mary's life that inspires us and make sure it lives on in us. Curiosity, creativity, kindness, graciousness, love of family and friends, creativity...she touched us in so many ways.

I was so very sorry to find out that Mary had died... She was always so warm and cheery, and I just thought she'd go on forever. For a number of years, Mary would invite Joan Kaplowitz and me to speak to her classes of MLIS students about information literacy. She really appreciated the interactivity we made sure to include in each guest session we did for her students. Joan and I were also very honored when Mary and Marcia Bates edited the 3d edition of the Encyclopedia of Library and Information Science, and asked us to write the essay for it on information literacy instruction. I send her family my deep condolences and hope their pain and loss will lessen, and they will be able to focus on their good memories of Mary as time goes by...

I took a class on historical research with Mary; she recognized my passion for my project (the life and times of librarian Miriam Matthews), and convinced me to turn it into a Master's thesis, for which she was my advisor. She somehow managed to be both encouraging and challenging, and the thesis and my subsequent work on Matthews benefited greatly from her generous advice. She was a wonderful professor and advisor, and a truly lovely person. I will miss her greatly, and my heart goes out to her family and other loved ones.

When I think of Mary, the first word that comes to mind is "kind," followed by "nurturing." And now, having read her obituary, "humble." She seldom spoke about her own achievements. As a teacher and an advisor, her focus was on nurturing the students' interests and abilities and empowering them to achieve their full potential. After I graduated, she remained an advisor and a role model, and also became a friend. She never stopped learning and growing. I last spoke with her in March, 2022. She was full of enthusiasm for her latest project, her first work of fiction. I'm sad that I won't get to read it. As others have said, I will and do miss her.

Mary was a wonderful colleague. Always supportive and kind to all of us, her faculty colleagues, staff and students. Before we started using the words diversity, equity and inclusion, anyone who met Mary knew that she lived by them. She advocated for the rights of women and the underserved, she would speak up for equity, and made you feel included whether in the classroom, at work, or one of her and Steve's dinner parties. She was a working mom, I could emulate as she was comfortable having Jonathan come to work and be part of our UCLA community. I will miss you, Mary.

I met Dr. Mary Maack just briefly through zoom in a class meeting her husband Dr. Stephen Maack took with me. But I could already tell she was such a great person, generous, welcoming, and loving all the people in her life. After reading the obituary, I admire Dr. Mary Maack so much more! What a beatiful life she had lived! My throughts and prayors are with the family and you all!

Mary was a valued colleague from my time at UCLA to the present. She was a talented scholar and a generous person. She was also a wonderful scholar. I will always remember her library, her dogs, and our yoga classes. Mary, you have left a legacy of schlarship and of sharing.

Mary was my first professor when I returned to UCLA for my doctorate in 1995. The class was a doctoral seminar on professionalism. After I wrote a paper chronicling the history of public librarianship, she called me into her office to discuss a project she wanted me to tackle: researching the life and career of former California state librarian Carma Leigh. To say my life changed that day would be no overstatement. Not only did I do the research, but Mary became my doctoral committee advisor as I decided to write a biography of Carma for my dissertation. Mary was there for me every step of the way, always looking for opportunities for me to share my research and constantly providing support during my more challenging days at UCLA. Thank you, Mary, for igniting in me a continuing passion for historical research and for being such an inspiring mentor. I miss you already. Love always, Cindy
