Mary Smith Obituary

March 25, 1922 - May 13, 2024 Our beloved mother, Mary Gillespie Jordan Smith, died May 13, 2024. She was 102 years old.

Mary was the heart and soul of our family. Born in Quito, Ecuador, she immigrated to the United States with her family at 14. She was married to James O. Jordan until his death in 1976. In 1983, she married Frank M. Smith, successfully blending their ten children into one wonderful family. She was known for her kind heart, generous nature, great spirit of adventure and epic Christmas Eve parties. She was a wonderful role model for always living life to the fullest, sharing what you have, and never forgetting the less fortunate. We were so lucky to have her as our mother and will miss her dearly.

Mary is survived by her children Peggy Phillips (Norton), Jim "Rocky" Jordan (Claudia), Cynthia Jordan, Karen Jordan (Charles), Paul Jordan (Teresa), Ricki Harvey (Ralph), Cindi Langendoen, Brian Smith (Jill), Kevin Smith (Jan), twenty grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husbands and Craig Smith.

Mary always said she had an amazing life. She would enjoy it if we all poured a glass of wine, preferably red, and toasted her celebration of a life well lived.

Funeral arrangements are pending. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation in her name to Immaculate Heart High School, 5515 Franklin Ave, Los Angeles, CA 90028, or the school's website www.immaculateheart.org.

Hasn't anyone noticed this woman's name, Mary Smith. Mary Smith is Leslie grandma from, but the woman featured in the picture isn't the Mary Smith I know, however she looks like Mary Link from Wilseyville, Ca. If you know or have seen this woman please have her call Leslie Agee. No Opposite...I'm worried....

I can hear Mary´s high-pitched voice calling each of her children. She never had to call loudly; perhaps the pitch and cadence was enough to bring them into the room. And when telling a story, how she would close her eyes to remember which one she was talking about...

I can see her eyes crinkle up as her warm smile appeared when a friend walked into the room...hands out for a hug and her sincere, "How aarre you?" which meant that you would not be walking away until Mary was satisfied the you had filled her in on yourself and every member of your family. She didn´t interrupt except to ask for more information. Mary let you know that she was truly interested in your conversation. (No wonder she had so many friends and visitors!)

As a member of the All-Star Moms of Van Ness Team, Mrs. Jordan was a fixture in my childhood. She kept the kind of home in which that every kid on the block felt comfortable. I spent a lot of time there with my best friend, Peggy. (What other mother would let you play jacks with a golf ball on the tiled bathroom floor? She didn´t even seem to mind when we tried to dig a swimming pool on the side of the house.)

My last visit with Mary was a couple of months ago. Remarkably, she had the same sound in her voice and smile on her face as she demanded to know about every member of the family. Then as we walked on her rooftop garden, she excitedly pointed out the flowers that she had watched grow there. That was a fitting last visit...seeing Mary happily aware of beauty emerging in the world.

Rest in joy, Mary. Your friends in heaven have been waiting for you!
