Melissa was one of my best friends, confidante and mentor. She taught me the importance of integrity and honesty above all else and I would not be the person I am today were it not for knowing her. I will never forget the times we shared, the lessons she taught me and the energy she will always exude in my life.
Melissa, I miss you deeply but have found some comfort in knowing that I have one of the strongest guardian angels I could imagine, you will always be with me. I'm incredibly honored to have been your friend and am eternally grateful for all that you taught me. Thank you for being you! You are undoubtedly one of the greatest spirits I have ever met.
Much love and eternal light,
Megan

I too first met Melissa in the Summer of 1969 at Humboldt State. We visited with her family in San Marino. We stayed in touch only through the early 1970s. When Ginny emailed me the announcement I was saddened and shocked. Melissa was a bright, funny, feisty young woman.
My heartfelt condolences go out to her parents, sisters and brother. All Blessings upon her soul.

I knew Melissa briefly in the summer of 1969, when we both attended summer school at Humboldt State. She was a wonderful, funny, bright woman. I am so sorry to hear of her death.

I felt a deep deep sense of loss/shock! when I came across news of Melissa's passing...in the Times Standard. I had a chance to meet her for a brief period in the 80s. And even though it was more than 20 years ago...it seems like yesterday... At the time, I was awed by her indomitable spirit...of a rare kind. She seemed to embody the pioneer qualities we typically only read about. It was not only her courage...that was so inspiring...but her honesty and generosity...that stood out...in the ways she approached her life and work (logging, graphic art, etc.)
I just can't help but feel that she has one of those spirits that lives on because of her vitality... At least, she seems so alive and real in my memories...I can't help but believe that she lives on...in powerful ways...too...in the lives of others.
I am honestly not sure if such thoughts bring comfort...but I hope so.
Because I know however much we want to bypass the pain of losing someone..(and we all deal with our loss in our own ways)...grief/sadness is natural too...especially losing someone as special as Melissa.
My thoughts are with family and friends who are missing her.

I am so sad to hear of Melissa's passing. Having been so fortunate to have been a childhood next door neighbor to the Phillips family, I send my love, prayers, and condolences to all of you. My brother and father also send their condolences.
When I think of Melissa, I recall her rock-tumbling machine. As a kid it was amazing to me that rough rocks could be turned into such smooth, luminous objects. I was always in awe of Melissa - particularly her strength of spirit and artistic gifts. She will be missed.
