Mervin Morris Obituary

July 4, 1920 - July 24, 2021 Mervin G. MorrisJuly 4, 1920 - August 24, 2021Mervin G. Morris, founder of Mervyn's Stores and philanthropist, passed away on August 24, 2021, at the age of 101.Merv lived the quintessential American Dream. He was born in San Francisco on July 4, 1920, to Fannie and Harry Morris. He was a third-generation Californian. His great grandparents ran a store in the Mother Lode during the Gold Rush. Merv grew up in the small Central Valley farming town of Delano, along with his sisters Bertille and Jacqueline. His parents ran a local retail store called Morris', and Merv learned the retail business early on by working as a sales clerk. After graduating from Delano High School in 1938, he attended one semester at the University of California, Berkeley, before being called home.Merv remained in Delano helping with the family business until he enlisted in the military during World War II. He was stationed domestically during the war, running an Army post exchange based in Arkansas. Merv was discharged with the rank of Captain.Merv returned home after the war and rejoined his parents in the family business. He eventually decided he needed to strike out on his own and relocated to San Francisco. On July 29, 1949, at the age of 29, Merv opened the first Mervyn's in San Lorenzo, California. While he was in the early years of building his business, Merv met Roslyn Grossman, a young woman from Napa, on a blind date. They married in San Francisco in September of 1950. They soon welcomed four children: Diane, Jeff, and twins, John and Jim.From 1949 to 1960, Merv continued to grow the San Lorenzo Mervyn's store, expanding multiple times beyond its original location and solidifying the Mervyn's way. He then set his sights on additional locations. Mervyn's celebrated its first day as a public company in the spring of 1971. With the additional funds from the public offering, Merv was able to rapidly expand Mervyn's. Mervyn's was sold to Dayton Hudson (now Target) in January 1978. Merv remained Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of the company until 1979, by which point there were approximately 75 Mervyn's stores.During his 30-year tenure as founder and CEO of Mervyn's, Merv built a reputation of having both a keen business mind and a deep sense of loyalty. His employees and customers loved Mervyn's, and Merv returned the feelings in spades. He was respected and beloved. He was an innovative leader, smartly choosing his store sites and understanding the consumers of the post-War boom years. In recognition of his achievements, in 1977, Merv was elected chairman of the board of directors of the National Retail Merchants Association, an organization comprised of approximately 3,500 retail stores worldwide. At the time, Merv was the first West Coast retailer to head the organization in more than 60 years. After he retired from Mervyn's, Merv became Chairman of Morris Management Company, a family investment firm. He held many board positions, including serving on the boards of Dayton Hudson Corporation, Ross Stores, Pacific Gas & Electric Company, Vans Shoes, and the Oakland Tribune. Merv also became a committed philanthropist and served as a trustee on numerous non-profit boards, including the Boys & Girls Clubs of America, the California Academy of Sciences, the Palo Alto Medical Foundation, Stanford Hospital, the Jewish Home for the Aged, Mt. Zion Hospital of San Francisco, and the University of Southern California. He was appointed to serve as a Trustee of the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum by President George W. Bush in 2002. He was also a civilian advisor to the Commanding General of the Army and Air Force Exchange Service.Merv and Roz built an admirable philanthropic legacy during their nearly 66 years of marriage. They made a major investment to build the Mervin G. Morris Clubhouse for the Boys & Girls Clubs of the Peninsula. They were also committed supporters of the Peninsula Volunteers in Menlo Park, providing critical funds to build the Roslyn G. Morris Activity Center. Their philanthropic interests further included the San Francisco Symphony, the San Francisco Opera, and the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum.Merv was the quintessential patriarch of his family. He was a devoted brother to his dear sisters and a remarkable father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. He was the master of the toast at every family affair and was deservedly the center of everyone's orbit. To imagine a family gathering without him is unthinkable, but we can rest assured that his astounding legacy will live on for his family and for the broader community for many years to come.Merv was predeceased by his loving wife, Roz, and by his sister, Bertille. He is survived by his four children and their spouses -- Diane, Jeff (Missy), John, and Jim (Susan), and his sister, Jacqueline. He is also survived by his 14 grandchildren, and his 10 great-grandchildren.

I was so saddened to hear of his passing. Mr Morris has lived a long blessed life. I have fond memories of speaking with him every once in awhile when he would call my office at CTP Aviation- we would chat about his health and how he is doing. I shared with him how much he reminds me of beautiful memories that I had with my mother of her favorite place to shop -the Mervyns store in San Lorenzo. She shopped there all the time. My school clothes was bought there and he laughed so much when I told him I got my first credit card there as a young adult and was so excited to Christmas shop there!
Mr Morris. you will be so missed and I will certainly miss your phone calls to go have a lunch date with your lady friend Cynthia- God bless you kind sir to eternity. Love and respect your friend Carmen Cruz

My Love goes out to the family for your lost. You had such a great leader in the family to learn from. We moved to San Lorenzo in 1955 and always enjoying shopping at that store. Mervyn's was my first Credit card it was on blue laminated paper. Our company was the contractor that did the sound system in store # 3. We ended up being responsible for doing 263 of the stores until 1993. We also did the warehouses & office buildings. I tried to work as many as I could myself because of the great store planning team he put together under Heinz Mueller. My special memory was at store # 50. I was just getting ready to sign at the front door, they had some one there because they were already stocking the store and person would do thing like fold towels plus watch the entrance. Mervin walked around me with a couple of staff people and she call out, excuse me Sir, you need to sign in. He turned around and signed in she turn red and said I am sorry and Mervin said thank you for doing the job I pay you to do. I had a whole new level of respect for Mervin and would hope I could follow those foot steeps for our employees. I have so many great memories and fun over those 25 years working with Mervyn's and the store planning team that Mervin put together. We did have some challenges when they moved in Texas, opening 13 stores on the same day and doing PA sound system in a warehouse 11 acres under roof in Plano Texas. Thank you Mervin for all those special memories and I hope our Lord has a special place for you all the people you have blessed. I also met my wife in store planning and we have been married for 35 years.

Thanks to Mervin G Morris I began my first career at Mervyns in Vallejo,Ca. I worked there for 16 years and I loved every moment. It taught me so
Much to carry on to other retailers. What I am most fond of is how he would decorate our stores at Christmas inside and out! The parking lot was so festive and the top of the roof. I invested in my first 401k and I was so sad when it closed. So thankyou Merv for my life lessons and experience in retail. My condolences to his family, but wow what a legacy!

Our neighbor and dear friend Bertille was Merv´s sister. I remember as a girl going with my mom, Bertille and Fannie Morris, Merv and Bertille´s mother, to grand openings of Mervyn´s stores. We were all so proud of his amazing success story. Later when I moved to Napa, I always thought of those times while shopping at our local Mervyn´s. My heartfelt sympathy to the family at this sad time and cheers to a life well lived.

I had the pleasure to meet and interview Mr. Morris in 1981 when he was honored by the National Retail Merchant Association. At that time, I was editor of the New Horizons, Mervyn´s corporate newspaper. He had already sold Mervin´s to Dayton-Hudson, so my interview was at his Menlo Park (maybe Atherton?) office. We both had San Joaquin Valley roots, but he was on the list of 100 richest men in the USA, so I was anxious to learn his philosophy of life. How does one rise from a small farm town to national success? Sadly, most of what he said that day I have forgotten, except for one theme. What I remember most from the interview was his emphasis on the importance of family. Mr. Morris said he never missed a Little League game in which his sons played. I took that to heart. It has guided me to seek balance in my own life.
I met my late wife at the Mervyn´s store in Fresno when we were college students. Four months after her passing, I sit here with tears of appreciation for this man whose creation changed my life.
God bless you, Mervin Morris.

Mervin Morris was a very kind & caring employer. I loved working for Mr. Morris for almost 10 years in the Store Planning, Construction & Facilities Dept. at the building that was once Capwell's in Hayward, CA. I started working for Mervyn's at CSB when they were starting up South Central offices in Texas in the Buyer's offices. At that time I was a "Floater" in their work program, I worked in different depts. then. I remember Mr. Morris walking through all the buildings wishing all his employees Happy Holidays with the biggest, kindest smile on his face. I was with Mervyn's when they made their 1st Billion Dollars! Mr. Morris was truly a great man! My condolences to his family and may his name live on in our hearts.

I cannot tell you what a treat it was to have my 1 annual day to go shopping in the original store in San Lorenzo. My mother didn´t drive, so we could only go when her best friend could take her daughter & us there. And oh what a thrill when her daughter & I found the same outfits, considering I always needed bigger sizes than her. (Still do!) I am so thankful for everything he did & probably how very little you all may have saw of him. There have been too many people to count as to how sad we all still are, that there is no Mervyn´s. May you find comfort & solace in the wonder & happiness that he brought to so many.

Although I didn't know Mr. Morris personally, he was the unknowing benefactor of my professional education. I grew up in San Lorenzo and always loved shopping at THE Mervyns, back when it was the only store. After college, I was hired in the Management Trainee program where I learned I was not cut out for retail. But I learned to manage people. I went on later to work as a manager for over 20 years with the City of Eugene, Oregon in various criminal justice and public safety fields. Mr. Morris and his team believed in me and taught me the basics. I'm forever in his debt. Please accept my deepest condolences.

Mr Morris was the best boss I ever had. I worked at CSB on Industrial in Hayward from March 1994-December 1996 in the accounting department as an assistant bookkeeper with Joanne Powers. The best 2 years and 9 months. He was a wonderful man and a friend to all. He would come around every morning and say Good Morning to us all and call us by name! RIP

I worked at the Princeton Plaza Mervyn´s store as a college student. I worked in the Men;s Department. I remember Merv coming in from time to time to visit the store. One time he came over to me and said "why don´t we have any Fruit of the Loom briefs in sizes 36 and 38?" I told him we were out of stock and there was no stock at our distribution center. He gave me cash; told me to go to another local store (not a Mervyn´s store); and buy some for our store shelves. He told me "it is important to have sufficient stock (of staple items) for our customers"---even if this particular bundle of briefs was sold at a loss.) He was the quintessential believer in "the customer is always right" and would not tolerate anyone who didn´t believe it. A "giant" of a man in many respects - - especially in retail/retail management and philanthropy for which he is well known. He made Mervyn´s a great place to work and it was never the same once he left. Rest in Peace, Merv Morris---you will always be remembered!!

As a child I shopped at your store and loved the area, Then as an adult I wired up your corporate office in Hayward and your other offices. You were a wonderful person. Yes Mervin, you were an honest guy. Peace on your journey in heaven, You are truely missed.

Deepest sympathy to his family. My husband Fred worked in the San Lorenzo store in 1964 before he changed jobs. Mr. Morris was sad that he moved on but i worked in the Fremont store in 1972. Moving on to the offices and buyers, transportation and finally the administration offices that take care of inventory, sales, returns extra till the year 2000. I loved working at Mervyns best job i ever had. If more people were person people which is what he was the world would be a better place. He is with God the heavenly Father now RIP
