Norman Lauchner Obituary

Lauchner, Norman Wilfred
January 8, 1921 - July 26, 2011
Norman W. Lauchner. Family and friends of Norm Lauchner mourn with great sadness the loss of a wonderful man. Norm died Tuesday, July 26th in his home in Rancho Palos Verdes. Norm was born on January 8, 1921 in Frankfort, Indiana. After attending the University of Alabama for two years, Norm came across a Navy recruiting letter, and accepted an officer's commission in 1941. Norm served in World War II as a naval officer in the Pacific and was a prisoner of war in the Philippines for three years. In 1953 Norm moved to New York to begin a career in advertising, and rapidly rose to the executive offices of Dancer-Fitzgerald-Sample. In 1975 Norm moved to California to open a west coast office for DFS. Norm retired as president of DFS California operations in 1985. Norm was a voracious reader, a lover of classical music and a sailing buff. He was a beloved husband, father and friend, who will be deeply missed by his wife Gail, son Charles, daughters Carolyn and Ann, grandchildren Charlie, Christopher and Kellanne, sister Carolyn and many, many friends whose lives were enriched by this great man.

I just heard about Norm's passing. I understand how sad everyone feels and I do as well. But I gotta believe you must be smiling at all the great memories he has given us all. He was one of the coolest people I ever worked with. Shoo, putting up with the manic riffing of a Bronx-born creative person was the greatest test of one's humanity. I can still see him shaking his head at me, but smiling, a real honest smile. Rest in peace.

He was a leader of men and he led me to return to California from Washington DC to work for him on the Toyota account. He interviewed me in the rain at Watkins Glen Formula One race and put me to work shortly thereafter.
I will be eternally grateful to the man and his insight.
RIP Norman.

Norm was a good man who I had the pleasure of working with for many years. I will never forget the many wonderful experiences I had while at DFS Torrance. Norm played a major role in making that time so special.
