Phyllis Otis Obituary

June 20, 1922 - September 25, 2016 Phyllis Latricia Otis, 94, a resident of Altadena, California, passed away peacefully on Sunday, September 25th, 2016. She and her husband (Johnny Otis) lived in Altadena. They were buried together during a private family gathering at Mountain View Cemetery in Altadena. Phyllis was born to Gertrude and Ernest Walker in Oakland, California on June 20, 1922. Her only brother, Thomas Jackson, preceded her in death. She attended Golden Gate Elementary and University High School in Oakland, California. She began college work before getting married and settling in Los Angeles. Phyllis was married to Johnny Otis on May 2, 1941. He preceded her in death in 2012. Johnny was a well known musician inducted in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and the Blues Hall of Fame. She traveled with Johnny in the United States and abroad. She loved supporting her husband in all of his endeavors. They were married for 71 years. They lived in Los Angeles, Sebastopol, and Altadena, California. She was not only loved and adored by her family, but by those who became life time friends. Those she met were truly touched by her genuine kindness and generosity. She was truly an "angel." She and her husband loved having pets. They were especially fond of cats and dogs. Dogs were always at Phyllis' side. Phyllis stayed home with her children throughout their high school years. For several years afterwards she worked for the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) in Los Angeles. She attended Altadena United Methodist Church. Her pastor was Reverend Yvonne Williams Boyd. Her daughter Laura preceded her in death in 2013. Phyllis is survived by daughter Janice; son-in-law Tony Johnson; sons Shuggie and Nicholas; grandchildren Michael, Gamel, Saran, Christopher, Nicole, Kevin, Lucky, Eric, and Niko; great-grandchildren Mason, Max, Natalie, Olivia, Michael, Omar, Khalil, Jhlequa, Jhamir, Kayla, Anthony, Marshal, and Blaire; great-great-grandchild Savannah; nephews Thomas and Robert and their children, and many other family and friends. Sending my belated condolences to all the famiky. To Shuggie: I remember your mom fondly. (I'm your high school pal Alfred's sister) Last time I visited by phone with her was shortly after your dad passed away. Last time I saw Johnny was at a concert in at the Hyatt in Valencia CA and sent a photo of the band...you, Bob, and Alfred. Good memories. Love you all.
