Quincy Jones Obituary

March 14, 1933 - November 3, 2024 The Horatio Alger Association mourns the loss of Quincy Jones, a 1995 Horatio Alger Award recipient. Born in Chicago, Mr. Jones rose from humble beginnings to become one of the most celebrated figures in music history. His impressive career included 79 Grammy nominations and 28 awards, making him one of the most nominated artists of all time. His unparalleled versatility allowed him to work with a diverse array of artists, from jazz giants like Dizzy Gillespie and Duke Ellington to pop icons like Frank Sinatra and Michael Jackson. Mr. Jones also produced the monumental charity single "We Are the World," featuring a star-studded lineup that included Bob Dylan, Stevie Wonder, and Bruce Springsteen, and co-wrote hits for Jackson and Donna Summer.

Beyond his artistic achievements, Mr. Jones was a dedicated advocate for education and the arts, receiving the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award for his philanthropic efforts. He was passionate about educating children, founding the Quincy Jones Listen Up! Foundation to connect youth with music and technology, believing that fame provides a platform to help others. His resilience in the face of adversity, including overcoming health challenges, inspired countless individuals, and his legacy will continue to make a lasting impact.

We extend our heartfelt condolences to his family and friends and are grateful for his many contributions to the Association.

I am and have always had a love for music. MJ was my first and all because of Q. I have looked for and read just about every producer, actor, actress, radio personality, DJ, rapper, singer, composer and talk show hosts words and remarks since you passed. What strikes me is everyone had the same sentiment. You were always there for them, guiding them, providing advice, showing up, making everyone feel special and validated. Also by just being you, effortlessly influenced their greatness because they wanted to make you proud. Additionally still being the man and father to your family is another remarkable trait. I´m so sorry you are no longer with us and the world with your family will forever be voided without you. Thank you for everything. Sanéa Pinkney

Q, I was saddened to learn of your passing. It was truly a sad day for me because it was always a dream of mine for you, me, and my husband to meet, make a connection, and work together. Then, after you and my husband met at LAX in 2001, he returned home later that day and shared the news (with me) that he met and talked with the cool and down-to-earth Producer and Composer Extraordinaire Quincy Jones! As a fellow professional entertainer, he was so encouraged by the chance meeting, especially after the conversation led you to share one of your phone numbers with him. Afterward, we believed it would be just a matter of time before the chance meeting between you and Larry would evolve into a long-lasting and reciprocal connection. But the unfortunate part of that chance encounter was that he could never reach you from that day on! But although our dream of friendship and collaboration was never realized, your remarkable talent and magnificent body of work was realized and celebrated around the world, and we are grateful to God for giving us the gift of (you) Quincy Jones! We also send our deepest condolences to your eternal loves (your 7 children) your grandchildren, your siblings, and your extended family. We pray they will feast on all of the loving memories of you. In addition, we thank them all for sharing you with us for so many years! Our hearts are sad, but our ears are glad that the Man, who was not a myth but a Legend, created, shared, and left behind a wealthy legacy of love, philanthropy, passion, and musical perfection! So, in honor of you and your excellence in music, my husband and I hope one day we can mirror a fraction of your accomplishments and your global impact after we release our first set of original kids' songs (in the coming weeks). Our songs are messages inspired by both imagination and observations that were written by me and were produced and performed together! Now I will close this message and this unfulfilled chapter of my life (never meeting and having a working friendship with you) by bidding you farewell and praying that God our Father will find favor with the life you've lived and that you are now resting safely and peacefully in his loving arms! Rest well, Sir!

Quincy, thanks for the memories! You did great producing Michael Jackson's "Thriller" as well as for other artists such as Frank Sinatra and other celebrities. Michael Jackson is my dance idol and I was great if I wanna be like him. But losing you was a sad thing ever done. Hope I do this very well but if you should've joined me, my popularity will soar me high just like my idol, crossing hard strict borders and reach to stardom whatever i want. Rest In Piece!
