Tributes posted on the REFORMANET Listserv as compiled by Al Milo
I was just informed that Rene Amaya passed away on December 26. Many of you will remember Rene who served as National REFORMA Treasurer for several years and also was one of the founders of the LA Chapter, serving as Chapter President in the mid- 80's. Rene retired from the County of Los Angeles Public Library a few years ago where his last position was Reference Librarian at the East Los Angeles Public Library. I worked with Rene at East LA Library for several years and always found him to be hard-working and very dedicated to serving the Latino community. Rest in peace Rene. Linda Chavez Doyle
I am so sorry to hear about Rene. I was very fortunate to have known him and work with him on REFORMA matters. I would like to pledge $100.00 to REFORMA National in recognition of his many years of volunteer service to REFORMA. Martin Gomez
Linda, Thank you for keeping us informed about Rene's passing. He was always a loyal and active member of REFORMA. His contribution to REFORMA was invaluable at a critical time in its history. John Ayala
Dear John and Linda, Rene Amaya will truly be missed. I know of his work as a fellow member of the County of Los Angeles Public Library. He left a legacy of excellence n serving the public and advancing the documentation of, by, and about our traditions, heritage & history at the Chicano Resource Center. Peace and blessings, Billie Frierson
Linda, thank you for sharing the sad news of Rene's passing. I want to add to the comments of fellow Reformistas who have acknowledged Rene as a mainstay of REFORMA during the first decades of the organization (1971 thru=mid-1990's) when he served as the Treasurer at the national level and when he performed double duty with service at the local level with the L.A. Chapter of REFORMA. Rene was very generous with his advisement regarding Chapter finances when the REFORMA de Utah Chapter was organizing in 1996. En paz descanse. Ben Ocon
This was sad news indeed. I hired Rene into LA County. He loved being a librarian. I recall many meetings at his home when we were forming the Los Angeles Chapter of REFORMA in 1980/81. He had also served at the Braille Institute in Los Angeles. He was very opinionated, set in his ways yet very passionate about his work. He had a lot of pride and I will miss him. Albert Tovar
Linda, thank you for the information on Rene's passing. I'm hoping someone will write about him for REFORMA Newsletter. Descanse en paz. Ninfa Trejo
I second Ninfa suggestion. It was my pleasure working with him in REFORMA when he was treasurer and he was indeed a dedicated REFORMISTA with a long life mission of serving the Latino community of East LA. Luis Chaparro
I recognize the valuable contribution of Mr. Rene Amaya to REFORMA. The Midwinter issue of the REFORMA Newsletter was printed just before the announcement of his passing, but I definitely support and ask our Newsletter Editors to write about him on the next issue. Best regards, Loida Febo-Garcia

Dear J.C. and familia,
We were greatly saddened by the passing of Rene, a dear colleague and friend. A dedicated Reformista, he provided leadership and financial expertise for both the Los Angeles Chapter and the national organization for many years.
I will remember Rene as a person of great wit, integrity, and intelligence. My husband also sends his condolences. He and Rene often spoke of their days with the Census B.
Que descanse en paz.
